Geelong Cats vs Gold Coast Suns: AFL live scores, blog

By TheSportsFreak / Roar Guru

An historic moment for the AFL as the Geelong Cats takes on the Gold Coast Suns at Simonds Stadium. We’ll have live scores and commentary coming up from 7.40pm AEST.

Tonight is the first game under lights at the Cats home venue – a moment that brings some modernity to the footy club.

And seeing as they’ve spent a bucket-load of cash to upgrade the stadium to around 33,000 it now turns Simonds Stadium into a genuine top class venue.

The game itself should be entertaining and there’s no doubt the lure of Gary Ablett playing against his old team under the new lights is part of the attraction to this fixture being set up.

Geelong has once again exceeded expectations of many in 2013 with a near faultless season to date.

They can obviously thank their ever impressive midfield brigade, defenders holding the fort and the brilliance of the youth.

But it’s hard not to be impressed with the form of Tom Hawkins this season, averaging around three goals a game and scoring ten goals in the last fortnight.

No doubt his presence grew during the 2011 Grand Final victory, but seems to have grown in leaps and bounds this season.

He will have to do battle without the J-Pod next him.

James Podsiadly was forced to pull out of the match midweek after injuring both his knee and ankle during last week’s win against Port Adelaide, with Nathan Vardy likely to take his place.

Vardy has a chance to shine following an up and down pre-season with his own injury concerns.

The Gold Coast Suns has started to really show what their potential will be in the coming years in the last few weeks.

Despite one poor performance at home against the Fremantle Dockers, the Suns have been playing some sensational football for a team that’s still frequented with second and third year players.

Last week was always going to be a massive test, but their first half was completely compelling.

Ablett running rampant once again, Dion Prestia working well through the midfield, Aaron Hall popping up with five goals…

But the most thrilling to watch is the pure skill of Jaeger O’Meara.

This kid was held off from the football world last season because of the drafting rules, yet his talent has always been there.

The endurance isn’t there yet, and probably won’t be there across the entire team for another 12-18 months, but the signs are strong.

If they can stay in this game as long as they did against the Hawks, they may just give the Cats a fair old fright.

FINAL | Geelong Cats 18.15 (123) def. Gold Coast Suns 10.11 (71) The Gold Coast faded away in that last quarter. And when you fade away from the Cats at their home ground, expect to get smashed! That's exactly what happened. Geelong had more in the tank in the last 40 minutes of that match. But, take nothing away from the Suns tonight - they were extremely competitive tonight. Stats to come on a really entertaining contest from Simonds Stadium
