India beat England to win Champions Trophy

By News / Wire

India beat England by five runs to win the Champions Trophy cricket final at Edgbaston on Sunday as the hosts’ wait for a major one-day international title continued.

In a match reduced to 20 overs per side because of rain, World Cup holders India were held to 7-129 after losing the toss.

But after Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara threatened to win the game with the bat for England, India took 4-3 in eight balls with seamer Ishant Sharma starting the slide with two wickets in two deliveries.

England needed a six off the last ball but that proved beyond tailender James Tredwell as the hosts finished on 8-124 in 20 overs.

Defeat meant England had still to win a major ODI title having lost three World Cup finals (1979, 1987 and 1992) and the 2004 Champions Trophy final against the West Indies at The Oval when they last staged the event in 2004.

Frankie being bitter will give you an ulcer. A 20 over slogathon is inconsequential to all but you. I hope you don't take it too hard when you fail to win back the ashes. The golden days are over and will never happen again to such an extent. Surely you don't think you deserve or will reach those lofty heights again. Good winners also know how to lose with dignity not bile. (Insert not so witty comeback from Frankie)

A winning side? Unless I'm mistaken the Australian national side has won 6 ICC 50 over competitions. You Pommies can't even win one in your own backyard...

Amazing game. Desperately disappointing for us but a gripping game of cricket where each team kept snatching the initiative from the other. Sharma's match changing over consisted of dot, six, wide, wide, wicket, wicket, dot, 1 run, crazy stuff and thrilling cricket throughout Commiserations to England, well played to India.

The hit and giggle of 20/20 is about to be replaced by an Ashes series. A good Old fashion 5 day arm wrestle here the Australians will be exposed as the lightweights they have become. The Australians desperation to be competitive is shown in their moral fudge by not sendng Warner back to the Colony.

Magnificent victory by the Indians. They backed up their billings as favourites, World Champions and ODI number 1 ranked side. The Pommies had it won with Bopara and Morgan slogging Ishant around mercilessly. But the Indians found a way to win. India become the second side, after Australia naturally, to win the ODI triple crown(50 over World Cup, Champions Trophy and ODI number 1 ranking) In Dhoni they've got a great leader. Oh Pommies you chokers, that Urn will be in Pup's hand in a matter of weeks. Thanks India for breaking those Pommie hearts!
