Warrant issued for Digby Ioane arrest over assault

By News / Wire

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Wallabies winger Digby Ioane after he failed to appear in a Melbourne court on an assault charge.

Ioane, 27, is facing a charge of unlawful assault after he allegedly assaulted a man in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran on March 9.

A magistrate issued the warrant when Ioane did not appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.

Ioane plays for the Queensland Reds in the Super Rugby competition and was part of Australia’s team that narrowly lost the first Test to the British and Irish Lions on Saturday night.

I don't know about French policy on convictions with regards to visas. Ioane needs to take this case seriously as he can't afford to be stuck in Australia due to an ongoing court case regardless of whether he is still in the Wallabies or Stade Francais expecting him to arrive.

Well well well Mr Pulver has come out and declared that the whole issuing of the warrant thing was a "storm in a teacup" ok so this is obviously quite common for members of the National Team then Mr Pulver ?

Mania - I agree with your point that a great number of the posts on this subject are unnecessarily critical and demeaning of Digby's extended family. I actually thought that some of the comments were very cheap shots and I was irritated by the tone of these posts. Some of this stuff is not in keeping with the values that this site projects. But it takes all types to make up this world of ours.

colvin - thats not just pro rugby players, its kids in general. most kids can easily stay on the straight and narrow if u give them something to focus on. its the idle time thats most dangerous when they'll get bored and be prone to doing something stupid.

What appears to be a constant with many pro rugby players, especially the younger ones, is that when their season gets disrupted by injury they get into trouble of various kinds. You can guess what happens, Too much time on their hands; boredom; lack of sufficient guidance, support, leadership, involvement from their clubs, other than medical. It seems that the clubs need to be more pro-active in this area. There's plenty they could do if the system identified and supported it. e.g. training programs at schools etc.etc. All the down time needs to be addressed some how.

OR why can't he be on top of it himself? Does he REALLY need to have someone hold his hand and take him to court to front for his alleged actions? Its not like money to get there is an issue. I can't imagine the ARU not releasing him either. These guys (Beale, O'Connor and any number of the others who act up and look to others to manage the situation) have to be responsible for themselves - they are men aren't they?

Surprised you brought in the racial stuff mania, I thought that you were bigger than that. I doubt his colouring or his heritage has anything to do with his non court appearance. It was obviously an oversight of his management, however he does have some blame as you would like to think that he should shoulder some responsibility for his actions and not leave it all to others. Its not as if they are all that busy like working 8 to 9 hours a day for a living like us mere mortals. That he is injured and out for the rest of the Lions tour might give him a chance to come down to earth and get his stuff in order. If the worst happens and he is convicted this would have serious ramifications for his career and his trip to Japan etc. Not that I believe for one minute that a high profile sportsman would be convicted of this action against him, judging on lots of past similar exercises.

Thats what happens when you let your manager take over your life, you stop thinking for yourself.I have no doubt Digby would have fronted if he was aware of the situation. Slack management. If he is charged this could be career ending due to different laws overseas with regards to his visa.

Interesting that so many people are quick to criticise. All we have is a news report with few details.. Let's see what unfolds as more details come to light.

There are reports he's out for his shoulder anyway, as is McCabe and Barnes. AAC and Lilo in doubt still.
