Origin II saved by its hype

By Sleiman Azizi / Roar Guru

A great Origin match? Don’t be silly. Queensland were a class above and they put on a quality spectacle, but don’t tell me that this was a match.

Queensland destroyed NSW. There was no contest. The Maroons were completely dominant through the entire match.

If this had been a Test match, everyone would be sounding the death-knell for international league.

But they aren’t doing that for Origin. Nor will they be doing it. As has happened in the past, and rightfully so, the story of Origin has come to the rescue.

The beauty of Queensland’s game will be rightfully lauded – they are executioners with a candy cane axe. And not a soul will suggest that Origin should die because the opposition didn’t – or couldn’t – turn up.

Even the controversy of the referees over enthusiastically enforcing the new sin-bin rule will only add to the story of Origin.

It will become entry in the list of legends that surround the event. A contest that wasn’t a contest is inadvertently saved by the referees. Never discount the power of controversy.

Here’s hoping that in next match, both teams turn up to play.

Let’s hope that the contest itself writes the story, and not the other way around.

what a load of bollocks. your comments you make up as some sort of excuse 'NSW don't whinge' 'don't want to play anymore' 'selection policies' you've been spanked sook. inglis chose QLD so deal with it. write a letter to inglis if it makes you feel better as for kurt, the game was sold out. good god, our game sells out in a couple of hours and depending if suncorp stadium members turn up to their seat can change the final crowd figure, otherwise every sold out event would have the exact same crowd. sore losers.

Wow, poor NSW, really. Pearce is a very poor excuse for a representative half back. Blues need someone like Cherry-Evans, did you see his bit of magic out wide that nearly led to a try. QLD got the ball back though and GI scored a few tackles later. BTW, Klein is possibly the worst ref I have seen at Origin level. I thought Archer was to be reffing this match.

These kinds of articles are pointless, Queensland just schooled the Blues as they have been doing the past 7 years. We will never want to loose and we will continue craving the wins. 10 in a row, we'll keep it going. I don't see why people complain about these games, usually they are close but Queensland are just a magnificent side. The Blues have smashed us in the past and now we are just getting revenge. Queenslanders love a fight and love the sting of battle. We admire our Origin warriors as kids. Queeslanders love a winner and won't tolerate losers. We play to win all the time. We wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a people who loose and laugh, like the Blues displayed in their dressing room last night.

Very true. A very poor side. The true colors came out last night. Pearce, Merritt, Maloney, Woods, they are just glorified first-graders, no where near up to Origin standard. Fifita was the only standout for me, who would have thought how good this guy could be at the start of the season.

No, the difference is that when NSW lose we don't whinge and say THE ORIGIN CONCEPT IS DEAD. Qld a bunch of hypocrites saying you care more Origin and the result than we do. When NSW wins 3 in a row you all don't even want to play anymore. Also you have zero integrity with your selection policies. Stop with the hypocritical rubbish

I think ticketek is to blame there, or perhaps Brisbane airport. The sold out signs were in effect, and had been four weeks.

seems someone is tiring of it north of the border not even selling out a origin in a 50 thousand stadium. the difference is nsw hasnt won in 7 years and we still sell it out would queensland do the same i do remember the three straight you fellas lost, and it nearlly killed origin, queenslanders jumped off in droves. ill walk in the desert, for one more year, it will just make the water taste that much sweeter when we get there

Agree madrid john, Seven years is never enough. That's the difference between QLD and NSW. We never get tired of rubbing their noses in it. The bigger the flogging, the better the match.

Thanks for reading. I've got nothing against the hype of Origin. What I am against is the idea that it wouldn't work for test matches. Origin has been given a chance to succeed. Test matches should too.

This article was too true. The hype was one of the greatest Origin hypes I have ever seen - maybe it was because NSW had there best chance in years to win and Origin series. I got a view point from both states. The Queensland newspapers were all talking about revenge on Paul Gallen. They gave out a free poster of Gallen's head on a dart board. With the title saying "Throw like a Gal." All the Queenslanders wanted was someone to punch Gal, not caring about a sent off. Instead all Gal copped all match was booing reception and a push in the back by Brent Tate (who got sin-binned for that - outrageous!) In New South Wales, the papers on the eve of the match where whinging about how they have never won a penalty count. And how they wish that refs would stop being biased. This article was completely biased as the NSW fans whinged about how the refs should be more fair. I will admit I haven't paid much attention in the penalties, but tonight I kept a close eye and only one penalty should not have been given and that was one player may have been unfairly done by lying in the ruck, but NSW still lost the penalty count 8-5.

The only reason you'd say last night was boring would be because you can't appreciate a consumate performance from a team largely written off because of their age. Great to see the core of the team impose themselves again. Here's hoping for a repeat in Sydney.

Queenslanders are the only ones who really care about SOO nowadays - I firmly believe that. Lots on NSW people just don't care and its in my experience mainly due to people just losing interest in league as it is not the same game it was

It was soldout, those empty seats were probably Fritzimmons union supporter mates who own suncorp stadium tickets, they cant stand league beating union crowds. Noticed they posted 52499 for the lions game, i think this crowd issue is dead, we need a 110 thousand stadium in Brisbane so we can fill the sucker with Maroons fans, and no more union test matches before Origin games, the field was a disgrace.

Obviously not someone from north of the Tweed are ya Johnno??? Last night a fizzer? Oh no my son, every minute (ridiculous send offs aside) was deeply fulfilling. As any QLDer will tell you, 7 years is simply not enough.

The point is that Origin's story, its hype, compensates for poor games. As it should too! That's what happens when you get a good promotion and marketing concept that is based on a kernel of truth and allowed to run with consistency and support. International league is not short of passion, or skill or history. Given half the chance that Origin gets, it will show why it deserves to be supported.
