New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney is taking a hands-off approach as Kiwis playmaker Benji Marshall reportedly considers his future in rugby league.
Marshall’s manager was approached last week by Blues rugby coach Sir John Kirwan about a possible switch of codes, adding further conjecture over whether the 28-year-old will stay at the Wests Tigers.
Marshall has been with the Tigers since 2003 and is contracted there until 2015 but a clause in his contract allows him to renegotiate.
Several reports that he is unhappy in rugby league after being stripped of the Kiwis captaincy and being demoted to the Tigers bench for one game following a form slump haven’t been confirmed by the player.
Kearney says he can’t shine any light on Marshall’s plans after last speaking to him two weeks ago.
“Benji will do what is best for him. We’ve got to let that play out,” he said.
“If he makes a decision to leave our game, I can’t do a great deal about that. He’s part of our 35-man (Kiwis World Cup) group at the minute and we’re planning that way.”
Marshall has previously been linked to rugby deals in Japan and with the NSW Waratahs which never eventuated.
