Carlton vs Collingwood: AFL live scores, blog

By TheSportsFreak / Roar Guru

One of footy’s oldest rivalries continues tonight as Carlton meet Collingwood at the MCG. We’ll have live scores and commentary from 7.50pm AEST.

Neither side comes into this one in the greatest form.

Carlton were brave, but ultimately out-muscled in aquatic conditions in Sydney last Friday night against the Swans, the Blues’ third consecutive loss.

Collingwood appeared to be travelling reasonably comfortably against Port Adelaide early on last Saturday afternoon but were steadily pegged back and could have no complaints after they were beaten by 25 points.

As such, the two sides sit ninth and eighth respectively on the AFL ladder, though they are separated by an eight-point margin.

It means that for ninth-placed Carlton a win tonight is virtually non-negotiable, as a loss would put them two, and possibly three wins outside the eight with eight games remaining.

Mick Malthouse has made three changes to the 22 that travelled to the SCG last weekend, with Marc Murhpy returning from a fractured cheekbone and Andrew Carrazzo and Andrew McIness also returning.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has made four changes to the side that lost to Port Adelaide with Ben Reid, Andrew Krakouer, Jarrod Witts and Clinton Young all coming in.

The Pies hold a slight edge over the Blues in recent times, winning three of their past five including their Round 2 clash earlier this season that Collingwood won by 17 points.

But as always with these two sides form, history and numbers go out the window tonight. The side that turns up ready to fight for four quarters should get the four points here.

Who takes it? Find out from 7.50pm AESTthe and leave your thoughts in the space below.

Some Carlton players simply watched this game unfold from about the 18 minute mark of the first quarter.

FINAL | Collingwood 17.16 (118) def. Carlton 12.5 (77) Mick Malthouse has been quite cagey at press conferences in the last few weeks. This week, he seemed to have an air of confidence about him. The press deserves to ask some serious questions of Malthouse and his players - tonight was a total shambles! Beaten in every facet of the match. Malthouse can use his best defensive strategies all he likes, but I dare say the Carlton fans would prefer to hear some honesty instead of what we're used to from Mick.

FINAL | Collingwood 17.16 (118) def. Carlton 12.5 (77) There's the final siren. Complete domination from the 25 minute mark of Q1 to the end of Q3. Carlton just got smashed in the middle. Swan and Pendlebury were outstanding. Cloke and Reid kicked 9 between them. Carlton's finals chances are now just about snuffed out. Collingwood win by 41 points!

Q4 2:30 left | CARL 12.3 (75) | COLL 17.16 (118) Dane Swan's now at 41 disposals (20 contested possessions), while Scott Pendlebury has 31 disposals (15 contested possessions). It's been a big second half from both of them. Fair point to raise about Carlton - 36 inside 50's, 15 scoring shots (12 goals, 80% strike rate). It's not been a terrible conversion. So it's the midfield who have been completely outplayed tonight.
