Dwight Howard did everything right in free agency

By Dominic Davies / Expert

Dwight Howard received a lot of criticism for how his free agency panned out yesterday, his eventual departure from the Los Angeles Lakers and agreement with the Houston Rockets had been labeled part of the ‘Dwightmare’ by fans and the media.

Heck, after the way the media acted on the night you’d be forgiven for thinking he was announcing his decision on an ESPN special.

Haha! Dwight Howard is so indecisive and immature! Haha! Not even Dwight knows where’s he’s going! Tell us your decision Dwight, tell us!

But what did Dwight do, exactly?

He entered free agency, made it clear he was visiting multiple teams and then told the media when he would make a decision (Friday).

Then he went to all the meetings (including the awkward ones), gave each team fair time, took two days to make his decision and then spoke to every team to let them know his decision before finally announcing his move to the Rockets.

That actually sounds exactly like how any pro sportsman should conduct himself in free agency.

But that’s not the circus we saw last night, was it?

When USA Today’s Sam Amick broke the news early that Dwight had chosen the Rockets, the flood gates opened.

The media contacted everybody they could to get confirmation, instead what they got was Dwight’s agent denying a decision had been made, the Rocket’s general manager telling us he’d heard nothing from Dwight, and the news that Howard was in fact flying to LA to have another meeting with the Lakers (unbeknownst to Lakers GM Mitch Kupachak).

Finally we got a report that now, Dwight is in fact 50/50 between the Lakers and the Rockets.

Que the outrage at the ‘flip-flopping’ Howard and the jokes, and the hate.

The one thing all the above reports had in common, including the initial report from Amick — although his sources were proved right at the end — was that none of it came from Dwight Howard himself.

Yes, you could argue that it was Howard’s ‘people’ who were to blame for feeding the media bogus stories of his indecisiveness, but the fact is instead of questioning the initial report, or the sources, everybody jumped on the Howard blame train and rode it into absurdity.

It wasn’t Howard who was the source in the initial report, or Howard the source of any of the others.

But fans and media were happy to slap their knees and crack the same unoriginal joke at the star’s expense like they had just exposed him for the obvious fraud that he is.

Perhaps it was because most already disliked Howard for his character on and off the court, perhaps it was because most are wary and sick of big free agents milking all the media attention, but the fact is Dwight Howard didn’t do anything wrong during this free agent period.

He took his time making his decision, made an effort to let all the other parties know that he chose not to sign with them and then announced the decision on his own terms.

It wasn’t Howard’s indecisiveness and immaturity that was exposed last night, it was the media and fan’s spite.

Criticise him for his play, criticise him for his off-court antics, please, but you cannot criticise him for how he conducted himself in free agency.

Also, nobody cares that Kobe unfollowed him on Twitter, how is that news?

(I make some rather broad generalisations about the media above, but Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski has been fantastic this free agency period. Credit where credit is due.)

I think they can run dual big men but one of them needs to be able to play at least 15 feet from the basket as a passer or shooter. Asik is like a discount version of Dwight, it is a shame because Asik - if you value defence - is a quality player. I can't see the rockets getting fair value out of him by shuffling him out for 15 minutes a game. Problem is finding a decent home for him where he isn't straight back to being a limited back up: Portland - Picks and CJ McCollum? I don’t think anyone wants batum’s contract Denver - Gallinari? Wilson chandler? Atlanta – Picks are all they have Washington - could be interesting Nene could play as PF but would need to step out to mid range more blunting his most effective skill which is post scoring Bobcats – would be great for a team like the ‘cats trying to reinvent themselves. Zeller is apparently trying to be a stretch 4 and with walker/Henderson/MKG/Zeller/asik I think they’d ahve a team that wouldn’t suck...which would make it on fo the best MJ bobcats teams ever. However there is a little known league wide rule forbidding MJ from making sensible basketball moves so he would probably need to give up 27 draft picks to make this look legit Magic - Asik is a better rebounder than vucevic and he's light years ahead as a defensive anchor

Yep! Totally agree. He's reportedly asked for a trade today as well. So while the Rockets have a great history of running dual big men looks like that's off the cards.

Can't play Asik and Howard together. They are apparently rebuffing trade offers but realistically they need to shift him for a stretch 4 or a shooting PG. Will be interesting to see what happens with Lin. A PNR point guard is kind of wasted with Harden.

Dead on! Although there's a lot of rumors that Omer Asik wants to be traded now that Howard is joining them. He's actually quite good and big men are prized these days so it's a good opportunity for the Rockets to get better elsewhere.

Houston will be very dangerous now. They can dominate teams up front with Howard/Asik and have great 3 point shooting in the 1-3 spots even off the bench. I like the twin towers concept and ultimately this could beat the Heat's fashionable small ball concept. No point in playing the same way. Now they just need some veteran leadership off the b ch in the back court.

Completely agree with almost everything you just said Silver. I'd also add that McHale is very good at improving a player's low-post game so Dwight, assuming health, can certainly do well there. I'm not sure the Lakers should have a fire sale just yet, however, as they want to milk Kobe to the last drop and have a shot at LeBron next offseason (no joke).

I think in the end Howard is an overrated player and a prima donna. And coming off a serious surgery which gave him a poor season for his standards. The lakers style didn't suit him though, and the Rockets may do well with him, but his attention seeking may disrupt that team. Kev McHale might teach him some maturity. The Lakers should follow Boston and go complete rebuild mode. Amnesty Bryant, trade Gasol and Nash if possible. Fresh, clean slate. Bring Kobe back at a reduced rate. He wont play the full season and coming off such a bad injury wont be the same again
