Novak Djokovic vs Andy Murray: 2013 Wimbledon final live scores, blog

By Alan / Roar Guru

After falling to Federer in last year’s final, Andy Murray has earned another shot at the Wimbledon championship but will need to get past Novak Djokovic tonight in what should be a pulsating final. Join us for live scores and commentary from 11.00pm AEST.

Murray and Djokovic continue to solidify their status as the two best players on the ATP tour as they contest yet another grand slam final.

Three of the past four grand slam deciders have seen Djokovic and Murray battle it out and the stage is set yet again for another titanic tussle at Wimbledon.

Djokovic and Murray have met in three grand slam finals, with the world no. 1 holding a slight 2-1 winning record over the Scot.

Tonight’s final however is the first time Djokovic and Murray have faced each other at Wimbledon and both players will leave nothing in the tank tonight despite surviving significant scares in their semi-final victories.

Djokovic once again found a way to prevail in an epic five setter against Juan Martin del Potro.

The Serb had to produce his best counter punching tennis to derail an opponent that was constantly keeping him pinned behind the baseline with his ferocious hitting off the forehand and backhand side.

Having survived Del Potro’s shot-making barrage, Djokovic will fancy his chances of defeating Murray tonight, given that the British player doesn’t hit as hard a ball as the Argentine does.

Murray once again struggled in his semi-final victory over Jerzy Janowicz despite prevailing in four sets.

The world no. 2 was once again too passive with his backhand and Janowicz immediately put him under pressure with his strong serve and forehand.

Having struggled to play offensive tennis from the get go against Verdasco and Janowicz, Murray can ill-afford such a tentative start against Djokovic.

Given that he is facing the world no.1 on centre court however, Murray should be expected to rise to the occasion tonight, much like he did against Djokovic when he defeated the Serb in last year’s US Open final.

Prediction

Djokovic and Murray at the moment set the standard for court coverage on the ATP tour and both possess the groundstrokes necessary to grind opponents to the ground.

Pound for pound however Djokovic remains the best returner in the men’s game, and possesses more penetrative groundstrokes than Murray.

If the Serb is allowed to play up on the baseline, Djokovic will control the match with his backhand and forehand, which he can hit down the line or crosscourt with tremendous power.

Djokovic also enter’s tonight contest against Murray having already defeated the Scot in four sets at this year’s Australian Open final.

While Djokovic starts a favourite in my book, expect this contest to once again go down to the wire before the world no.1 once again prevails in another epic contest that will see both player pushed to their limits.

Djokovic in four tight sets.

Despite squandering three championship points in the third set, Murray has eventually prevailed to win his second grand slam and first Wimbledon title. He outplayed Djokovic today and the straight sets scoreline reflected his dominance despite a very tight finish. Djokovic had chances in the second and third set to take control but failed to consolidate his breaks. Murray just played with more energy and moved superbly around the court. Overall, a flat performance from Djokovic compared to what we expect from him. Murray though superb and this could very well give him the confidence to challenge for the world no. 1 ranking. Murray on top of the world now. British tennis on top of the world. British sport on a high overall.
