Griffin's Broncos at 26 percent and sliding

By Sluggers / Roar Rookie

Since Anthony Griffin signed his extension in July 2012, the Broncos record reads as seven wins from 26 games. That is a winning record of just 26%. Griffin’s current contract runs out at the end of 2015.

Although the lack of wins is alarming, what’s more concerning is the direction the Broncos seem to be taking.

What is the thought process with Griffin persisting at using Sam Thaiday as a battering ram in the front row week in week out? As a fan, I’m concerned what toll this is having on Thaiday’s game and body.

Thaiday is best used running on the edge picking out the smaller players – did Griffin not watch how Thaiday was used in Game 2 of the Origin series?

Corey Norman has signed with the Eels for 2014, where does that leave the Broncos for next season? Josh Hoffman is playing great footy this year, why aren’t we shifting Hoffman back to fullback with the view of developing his game?

I have no qualms Norman looking after his future beyond 2013, but as a Broncos fan I want to see that our team is prepared come 2014.

I read reports the coach has what it takes, if that’s the case why are we sitting 13th on the ladder and how on earth are we 26% since July 2012?

Look at the recruitment of other clubs this year, and look at Brisbanes. We have failed to deliver new talent to the club whilst several amazing players have left. Should have chased JT. Need to chase Barba and DCE, Adam Reynolds or Luke Brooks.

Gaz The whole management is very amateurish at the moment. It reached it's maximum state if idiocy earlier this year when they were going around proudly declaring there was no need to look outside the club or it's feeder clubs for new talent. As if they are expecting to pull another Langer or Locky out of thin air. Can you imagine an AFL or NFL club with that attitude As you I am totally disillusioned with this management.

It is obvious to some of us that the Bronco management consider - as long as they can turn out a roughly competitive side rather than one that can win a premiership and as long as they have a reasonable membership, Friday nite on channel nine and a bunch of sponsors willing to part with their bucks, can provide a dividend to their share holders and be the only club in the NRL to make a profit - well, welll nothing else matters does it? Wrong! I have my own business and the old adage - customer is always right is a smart one. Trouble is, to me, the management of the Broncos havn't quite worked out who that is. It appears the may consider the shareholders and sponsors fit that bill but guess what? Without the fans and supporters there won't be any shareholders and sponsors so they need to wake up that their fans, members and supporters are their true customers and they need to change direction and provide a football team including coach etc that ensures a following consistent and befitting a one team town. To do otherwise will only give the second Brisbane team a hugh advantage and don't worry it will happen.

Gaz I know a lot of Broncos fans from the Rockhampton area who used to happily fly down for 2 or 3 games a season. But no one is bothering at the moment. The stuff they are serving up is just second rate. Could not agree more as regards pathetic recruitment . . To be honest I thought our attack was fairly pedestrian even when Locky was in his final years. That is when we should have been looking for a decent half and five eight to replace the champ.

Dale Dropley a "great" player, an "Origin player"?? You are kidding right Oiks? Absolutely the loss of Yow yeh was massive as that kid was going to be an absolute superstar but leave out any comparisons between him and the other bloke, a state league player at best.

Richard, Absolutely correct, this year is done and dusted as far as Brisbane and a few others are concerned, but unlike others, Brisbane have failed to make any apparent attempt at improving and fans are facing the same sort of disappointment next year and beyond. Dragons and Eels are beside them on the premiership ladder but at least those clubs are giving their supporters some hope and something to look forward to in terms of player recruitment for season 2014. As one of those frustrated Bronco members and season ticket holders, I’m hearing on the ground that diehard fans are willing them to finish on the bottom of the ladder as hopefully a catalyst to force the hand of the decision makers to reach into their profits and provide a game winner or two. That’s sad.

Correct, the NRL has got to be up there with the worst (NSW) administration ever of all professional sport. the last 2 months, the lions have wiped the floor with league. all the NRL does is dish up reserve grade trash and expect punters (and real gamblers as well) to enjoy the rubbish. a joke. as for the broncos, how did A.G go from the front row to the front office so quickly? he has less than no idea.

I can say they lost both Yowyeh and Copley, both great players, origin players. But still, you only have to look at the roster for after Origin, Broncos dont have a game in Brisbane for 4 weeks, so 4 weeks, no A-grade Footy in Brisbane. Tell me this is not the work of a mad scientist, or crazy fool who is trying to kill the code. Brisbane, our heartlands, with no game on for a month, A MONTH.

Last year the Broncos master plan was to grind opposition teams into the ground with mistake free football (ie 4 or 5 hit ups and a bomb into the corner) and enthusiastic defence Points came mainly from getting lucky with bombs , Hodges manufacturing something or a crash over try from Teo or Glen. The plan worked for the first 10 rounds or so, then fell apart. The Broncos actually ground themselves into the ground and their solid defence disintegrated as they scraped into the finals. This year the plan is more or less the same even though it was didn't work last year. But what else have they got? Zip. In order for tired forwards to defend for eighty minutes there has to be at least some expectation that the backs will every now and then do something exciting (A la Langer .,Walters , Renouf Barber Slater etc) . They just do not have anyone approaching that class other then Hodges. Hook is probably a good coach in that the current team is probably playing as well as their abilities allow..I think even the diehard fans know this year is a wriet off . But what about 2014 2015 2016? Something has just got to change.

Sack Griffin. I have seen players playing out of position but never the best players in their position playing elsewhere on the field for an extended period. I agree, return Thaiday and Hoffman to their best positions. MacGuire and Dodds have been a massive disappointments for me this season. I thought we could build the go forward on the back of these guys but it doesn't appear like it. Benny Hannant is the only guys who's stood up in front.

As a Broncos fan I suggest we continue to support them. With the likes of Parker, Thaiday & Hodges we have good experienced leaders that will help the young talented fellas coming through.

Gillett and Glenn combined have missed 90 tackles between them for the Broncos, in comparison, SBW and Cordner combined have missed 50 tackles. Rather then say who should be dropped to the bench, you should be asking why we are missing so many tackles. Broncos success was brought on by strong defence. As I mentioned Hoffman is among our best for 2013. He was good enough to play fullback in 2012, so why isn’t he afforded the same opportunity this year? We should be looking to develop someone at fullback this year so we can hit the ground running in 2014.

Good concise article. It appears Griffin has had to make the best of a bad lot playing backrowers out of position. It should not have come to this and Brisbane now has a 26% record bcause of it. The halves have also been pretty ordinary. Sluggers - interested in any suggestions by you for the rest of the year.

Another year of what we have had for 2 years now, will just about finish Queensland as a rugby league state. This game had a chance to show leadership and bring in another Brisbane team, what did they settle for, the money. Lets have alook at how they, (nsw), have growth the game. Brisbane is a rotting basketcase, the CEO is driving them further into the ground, memberships have staganted, players are reserve grade quality, the coach introduced local juniors that are not a-grade quality. And to admit they were wrong, they have allowed juniors to leave, and good talent to also leave. Beale Teo. NSW allowed the teams in the Sydney west to rot to a point where they needed life support. Eels and Panthers were and are a mess. They backed Joey to become a Immortal when it was plain wrong. They backed Gallen when he brought mmassive pressure on the code for brawling, much like they allowed Manly get away with bad crowd behaviour. The refs have been nothing short of terrible, you only have to look no further than the way the Cowboys have been treated for 10 years to realise that we might as well not even have them in the comp. Why bother, they cant win in Sydney. Expansion teams, the Titans and Storm were on their own, left to fight for their own suvival, almost killing both clubs. They almost killed Brisbane league when they admited the Broncos, yearas ago now i know, but Brisbane and QLD had to rebuild a state comp. And where are they now, no honestly, where is rugby league now. ? I will tell you, a code that is struggling to keep veiwers, a code that is not growing, a code that has little to no credibiltity, a code that makes more mistakes than ever before. You only have to look at the reffing and the games roster this year to see how terribly wrong they have got it, then we have Whitey , CEO of the Broncos signing Griffith for another year. This is the madness of this code. It is like nobody knows how to stop the rot, or help the code right itself. The Broncos as a club will pay for this incompetence, even if they sign Barba or some other big name, it wont help bad management.

Re: Thaiday, it's the same thing the Bulldogs did with Mason, which made him less effective. Problem is that when you have lots of backrowers at a club, you think you are doing the right thing by moving one of them up front, but when your best backrower is Thaiday, I think you lose something out of the equation. Anyway, the Bronco's problems are the halves. With very little variation in attack, you are always going to struggle. If I was the coach, Scott Prince would have never been signed. It's little wonder that the Bronco's resemble the Gold Coast of last year with Prince leading the way.

Sluggers - there is a difference between being able to count and being able to analyse. Two queries for you. If you want Thaiday to play as a wide runner (which he does for big parts of the game anyway on rotation if you actually watch and don't just read the starting list), which back rower do you drop - the two who play for Queensland or the one who is a Test player for NZ? And so why isn't Hoffman playing fullback? A guy is leading the try-scoring list for almost the whole comp while playing winger - why would you change what actually is working???? Have you considered Hoffman is actually a winger, and playing him at fullback would not bring the same results? You are right, 26% is poor and needs to be turned around. And that's what they are working on. You are a good counter Sluggers - analysis may not be your strong point.
