Clarke vs Watson: Arthur's explosive faction claims

By The Roar / Editor

Former Australian cricket coach Mickey Arthur has reportedly made claims of a fractured team environment between captain Michael Clarke and Shane Watson, in legal documents which seek up to $4 million in compensation, or his job back from Cricket Australia, claiming racial discrimination.

Arthur was sacked last month before the start of the Ashes series, CA claiming he failed to arrest declining standards of discipline in the team.

But Arthur is taking CA to court as he seeks payments and compensation through to the end of his 2015 contract.

He was reportedly on a $400,000 a year salary with bonuses of up to $200,000 per annum.

The Seven Network reported the documents tendered to court by Arthur showed a fractured team environment with captain Michael Clarke and star allrounder Shane Watson at odds.

“There was major tension between Michael Clarke and Shane Watson,” Seven reported from Arthur’s document of claim.

The network also alleged Clarke had described Watson and his faction as “a cancer”, with Arthur calling himself the “meat in the sandwich” in the imbroglio.

Arthur also allegedly said that Watson had tipped him off about the incident in which Australian opener David Warner punched English batsman Joe Root in a bar before the series start.

The incident proved to be the last straw for CA, who sacked Arthur shortly thereafter.

Warner was subsequently fined and suspended, and missed selection for Australia in the first Test.

Arthur went on to say in the tendered document that CA did not support him over the ‘homeworkgate affair’ where four players were stood down from a Test in India for failing to do an assignment.

He alleged that he was discriminated against because he was from South Africa and did not understand the Australian way.

“We’re disappointed it has come to this position but Cricket Australia is confident in its position on this matter and I’m sure it will get resolved in an appropriate fashion,” CA lawyer Dean Kino told Seven.

on one point jmw ...I reckon I could find several hundred people overseas in developing countries that would probably do your job for half as much money ...and probably just as well ... Do you see that line of argument as a reasonable proposition ? so I think we can put that one to rest ....also if has been reported a lot of coaching contracts only require a 3 mth payout apon termination or similar...I don't agree with that either ...he should be paid a figure close to what he would have earned for the life of the contract ...I am assuming that CA would not be forthcoming in line with that argument so he decided to go legal...the fact that he has used the firm he did is unfortunate for oz cricket ..as they rely heavily on media sensationalism hoopla and hyperbole ....to cow there opponent and force a settlement ... I have no problem in him seeking a reasonable payout .....The people who selected him and signed him to a long term deal ...well that is an entirely different matter ..they are the real culprits in this matter....im not a great fan of mickey as a coach ..but I do believe he has several valid points ...he was sacked basically because of warners misbehavior in a bar ...and the fact that Clarke and Watson had a poisonous relationship ...which lead to his ordinary record with oz as a coach on your last point fair enough a good witty sledge is all part of the fun ...calling people names ...naaaaa..not so sure ...the best sledge on me in this particular forum was the bloke who said does his mum know he is on the internet ... not bad whish I had used that one ...c ya when its roaring

You're good with this sleuthing Davos...I was charged with a few reds which raised my ire. I think Arthur is graceless for suing his employer who had faith in him (when others clearly didn't) and paid him very well. Who here wouldn't gladly take his job for half the salary? I'm happy enough with what you said. All part of the fun I reckon. No harm, no foul mate! Aussies enjoy a good sledge ;)

j m w just re read last nights posts this morning ...kept a weather eye out...on your posts as I went ...just wondering what it is u actually brought to the debate besides vitriol and personal insult ...I counted a couple of " codswallops" a few ": bollocks" .."pillocks "...a few noughies as well and a "clueless dullard "...Oh ! and that's right ...u work in IR ..so its a fair bet your some kind of wanna be lawyer type .. with a massive ego and an overly developed sense of self importance who thought he might condescend to the great unwashed masses and sprinkle a few of his sparkling witicisms .....probably working on the side of big buissiness to try and screw the little guys who come up against it ...I love that joke ...you know the one ..."What do you call 200 lawyers chained together at the bottom of the ocean" ....A good start !....but even then you would probably be the weakest link

Well considering the damage he has taken to his name being involved in what is now a shambolic organisation, He should have asked for 10 million. He has the same odds of being an international coach as bob woolmer now.

Me too. Khawaja and the Kat friends I think which can't have helped. Johnners and Patto probably, although this is probably from blokes having a bit of a laugh at a stupid task. Maybe Lyons, certainly odd to leave him out after 9/165 but Clarke not a selector then? Interestingly all Khawaja's age peers, Warner, Smith, Hughes appear to be Clarke's.

just curiously who is in Watson camp? The homework crew and who else? Khawaja-Clarke seem to have a history, maybe dating NSW days?

whatever happened, it happened post Hussey but far more importantly Ponting's retirement. We were aware of personality differences between Clarke and Watson but no real rift in the team. Clarke's relation with Ponting (volatile in itself) was giving him legitimacy, Ponting's stern support for Clarke had him in a stronger position than he really had in the team. I suppose this shows Clarke might be a world class batsmen but he certainly is no leader of men.

Ponting made it absolutely clear that Watson was not a problem under his captaincy.

It was a clear case of double standards for certain people - I'm all for whoever pointed that out.
