Pearson primed to defend world title

By Jocelyn McLennan / Roar Guru

Sally Pearson has discovered her form and mojo in the nick of time to defend her world 100 metres hurdles title in Moscow at the 14th IAAF World Championships starting Saturday 10 August .

Pearson, who has struggled to recover from a hamstring injury all season, finally got a win on the board at the London Diamond league meeting on July 27.

While the time of 12.65 seconds was sluggish by her 2011 and 2012 standards, it was the win that was the important confidence boost for her.

“I think I have just as big a chance as everyone out there and I can’t wait to see what I can produce. Everyone knows I’m a big time performer and that is what I thrive on.” she said.

Pearson is the captain of the 46-strong member Australian team, the second biggest behind the 54 sent to Sevilla, Spain in 1999, and one more than sent to Deago, South Korea in 2011.

While so much gloom and doom has been written about Australia’s sporting performances this northern summer, especially when competing against Great Britain, one victory over Britain recently snuck under the radar.

The Australian 4 x 100 metre relay team defeated both British teams at the London Diamond League to confirm their qualification for the World Championships.

To be fair to the British A team, they did drop the baton.

What is so encouraging about the quartet of Jarrod Geddes, Nick Hough, Tim Leathart, and Josh Ross is that only the latter, is a relative household name.

The team was very slick in their baton changes and not only were up with the field the whole way in London, but the long back straight run by Ross, had Australia on the shoulder of the Jamaicans.

That was until Usain Bolt took the baton of course. Game over.

Josh Ross is an athlete reborn. After a couple of dark years struggling with depression and motivation issues he appears to back to his very best and has qualified for the 200 metres in Moscow.

Judging by his efforts in the London Diamond League, a semi final, if not better, is within his grasp.

Veteran and three time Olympic medallist Jared Tallent, apart from Pearson, is perhaps Australia’s only other track or road, medal chance.

Tallent, is such a big time performer and thrives on the occasion. The conditions in Moscow should suit him well.

Potential finalists include Collis Birmingham in the 10,000 and perhaps the men’s 4 x 400metres relay team.

It is perhaps time for Steve Solomon to leave the selection controversy of the London Olympics behind him and step up to the plate and lead from the front in this event, although disappointingly he has not qualified to run the individual race.

20 debutants make up the 46 member Australian team, who are competiting in their first international senior event.

This is very encouraging for the future of the sport especially on the back of the outstanding World Youth Championships results in Ukraine in July.

thats why I used the word "perhaps" when referrring to the 4 x 400 team...it is a long shot that they will make the final but in all relays anything can happen with batons being dropped etc.....I am quietly excited about our 4 x 100 metre team...they were excellent in London!.

So no world champs on Oz tv it is. Shame on australian FTA and sports channels for not offering us the biggest athletics comps of the year. Why? Because you/we dont have a Mo Farah, a Usain Bolt, a Jeter, Chicherova etc? What a parochial, narrow minded decision. i sometimes dont get this country.

Very optimistic with the suggestion the men's 4x400m relay team may make the final. No Australian male has broken 46.0secs this year. On current form this is the weakest men's 4x400 team we have sent to a major champs. Unless there is a dramatic break through (like Mark Ormrod in 2004) with a couple smashing out big sub 46s splits, this team will be lucky to break 3-04 which in world terms is pretty pedestrian now days. Have a lot more faith in the 4x100m lads. Terrific run in London with a creditable 38.71. Anything around the low 37's will get them into the final and with the unpredictability of baton changes in the 4x1, anything could happen.

No Ryan Gregson...and Steve Solomen has been at Uni in the USA Stanford I believe...where John McEnroe went..The Brits are talking up Mo Farah for 3 gold medals no less...he is in form BUT 3 is a BIG ask..Lauren could make semis but her the final maybe beyond her on current form in Europe....at least she is there and competing...I am for her for that if nothing else...better than being fat and lazy on the couch! talking about myself there! Zoe Buckman has HUGE future...raw talent...tends to get bullied in the races...needs a bit more mongrel in her to keep her place in the mob and not get shoved around

Thanks for the info Jocelyn! Hope you're right and eurosport Australia shows it (I also saw they do in europe but was the same with the swimming champs ). Have been following the Diamond league meetings too and I would be extremely disappointed not to get the worlds live on tv. Love the atmosphere of the morning series in particular, empty stadiums, mostly amateur athletes taking part. Love it.

Eurosports own website say they are running all sessions live but it does not appear in the Foxtel schedule in Aust. It says Europsort HD is running it. You would think thay europsport in Aust has shown all the Diamond League all season that they would do the World Champs. I am hoping the Europsport News Channel run it in full. Otherwise streaming is the only other way. Any Olympics the most watched event is the mens 100 metre final..It transcends and defines all other sports...everyone talks about it...and yet it appears come the world championships it is not even televised in Aust. Shame...big shame.....hope it is rectified by the time Sally runs next Saturday.

Jocelyn the best I can find is a one hour highlight package each evening on SBS 2. Is that all there is? I don't think Sally's quite rediscovered her mojo. She won a race when the comnpetition was easier. I don't think she'll have had time to come back from her hammy injuries to get back to her best. I do expect her to medal though. Where has Steve Solomon been? At Stanford? How has he been running? He didn't appear over summer. Is Ryan Gregson running and in form? Also, Zoe Buckman must be some chance of making the final. She was leading a Diamond League 1500 inside the last 200 the other day. OK, she faded to about 4th or 5th, but that's quite something for an Aussie. Lauren Boden an outside chance of making the final. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Ethiopians and Kenyans attack Mo in the 5km and 10km. I hope we see a decent amount of those races in the highlight packages.
