An action packed finale to Stage 5 of the 2013 Vuelta a Espana witnessed Daniel Moreno claim the stage honours for Team Katusha as Vincenzo Nibali regained the Maillot Rojo (red jersey) from Chris Horner.

However, Horner may feel aggrieved at the race organiser’s decision to award a gap.

The 189km from Lalin to Fisterra was rather more timid than some had hoped.

An early five-man breakaway of the day was established around the 12km mark containing Danilo Wyss, Nicolas Edet, Juisse Veikkanen, DennisVanendert, and Alex Rasmussen.

The breakaway gained a maximum time advantage over the peloton of 7’19”.

The first intermediate sprint of Stage 5 was won by Rasmussen, with Wyss second and Edet third, whilst the second intermediate sprint was won by Edet, with Vanendert second and Veikkanen third.

The breakaway were soon swept up during the climb of the Mirador de Ézaro, with Edet, followed later by Wyss, surviving to take the ‘King of the Mountains’ points ahead of Nicolas Roche.

The ascent of the Category 3 Mirador de Ézaro saw the peloton fragment in to several smaller groups. Fortunately for the majority of the stage favourites most of the peloton managed to regroup.

One notable absence was Philippe Gilbert, whom finished the stage 14 minutes adrift.

With Edet still out in front of the peloton, five riders soon joined him up the road in an attempt to steal the peloton’s thunder.

Joining Edet were Amets Txurruka, Luis Leon Sanchez, José Herrada, Dominik Nerz, and Angel Vicioso.

While the new six-man breakaway bravely fought to stay away, they were eventually nullified by the peloton with 14km remaining.

The stage were to be decided by a sprint at the finish. However, Juan Antonio Flecha had other ideas, attacking on the uphill slope to the finish with 1.1km to go.

Lurking at the fore of the peloton waiting for his moment to strike was Moreno, who with roughly 600-800m to go attacked and passed Flecha.

Those behind ultimately left it too late to chase down Moreno, who soloed to victory ahead of Cancellara and Michael Matthews of Orica-GreenEDGE.
