Wests Tigers veteran Braith Anasta says the NRL club’s boardroom needs to get itself in order before they can even hope to achieve on-field success.
The Tigers will close the book on a miserable season on Saturday night when they take on North Queensland in Townsville – Benji Marshall’s final game in the NRL just a microcosm of changes needing to be undertaken by the club.
While the playing future is seemingly bright with the likes of Luke Brooks, Mitchell Moses and David Nofoaluma all tied to the club long term, Anasta said the boardroom politics which have been prevalent throughout the joint-venture’s existence had to be resolved.
The board is made up of members from both the Balmain and cashed-up Wests Magpies clubs – with Balmain’s financial struggles reportedly at the heart of much of the in-fighting.
“It’s really important – it’s not a coincidence,” Anasta said of on-field struggles being attributed to the boardroom squabbles.
“The club’s got to really fix up at board level and throughout the whole of the organisation in terms of everything – facilities, the way the place is run.
“The good thing is the rapport we’ve had with the board is they’re going to fix all of it up.
“I think that’s real positive and the players are excited about that.”
Anasta said he had no regrets about his decision to sign with the Tigers, who threw him a lifeline after being told he was unwanted at the Sydney Roosters.
He admitted the departure of the coach who signed him – Tim Sheens – before he could play under him, made his adjustment difficult, but said he was optimistic about the club’s 2014 chances.
“Our performance hasn’t been good enough, but I really think we’ll learn a lot from the year because we’ve had so many kids come into first grade,” Anasta said.
“It’s been a tough year, but I think we’ll benefit from it next year.”
