Let's face it, it's been a poor NRL season

By Jack Daniels / Roar Pro

While it has definitely had its fair share of highlights and history making moments, 2013 has been a less than spectacular NRL season with plenty of disappointments.

Lets start with ASADA.

To put it simply, they have annoyed fans, dominated headlines and could give some of the game’s stars hefty bans.

The Sharks finished 14th in 2011 when they were allegedly taking illegal substances. It’s not like they affected the outcome of the comp so can’t they just forget about it?

The Canberra Raiders were a team that went from a promising pre-season, to an absolute mess.

Josh Dugan played one game and was sacked. The bromance know as ‘Dorguson’ is no more, with Sandor Earl facing a hefty ban for using performance enhancers and Blake Feguson being sacked by the club.

Anthony Milford, a favourite for rookie of the year, wants to leave and now Josh Papalii is in trouble over alcohol issues.

At the Bulldogs, the Daly M winner from 2012, Ben Barba, started the year on fire in the All Stars game but from then on didn’t have half the season he had last year.

Obviously, he had distractions. A breakup with his partner, having his daughters taken away to Queensland and, apparently, gambling issues.

The Bulldogs are only a shadow of the team they were last year.

Finally, a superstar of the game will leave without a happy ending. A favourite son of the Tigers, Benji Marshall hasn’t had a finishing season to remember.

Matt Bowen will also leave, as will players who have struggled in their final years, such as Matt Cooper and Ben Ross.

Let me know what you think about 2013 and whether you think the lows outweighed the highs.

I think its been a great year for Footy. Granted that my team won the premiership and looks set to make it back to back premierships next year as well. However the whole Sharks saga hasnt distracted me at all. And I really couldnt care less about Canberra or the Bulldogs. All teams go through some hard times. And it happens each year. Nothing new this year in that department apart from the ASADA investigation. And it should not just be forgotten either. I hope that Sandor never touches a football again, and while I do like the Sharks as a team, if it comes out that they have cheated I hope every player caught is thrown out of the comp for good. We dont need cheaters in our game. Whether or not it had any effect on the outcome of the game or not is irrelivant.

You have no idea about the Benji the person. I'm sure he will really enjoy being in Auckland and not having to deal with the hero status. And I'm sure the new challenge will spark some good rugby.

I thought that this blog was all about us losers having a whinge. Dom has done a good job and every year once your team is knocked out their should be a whingers blog. Well done Dom. I hardly ever get a chance to have a good whinge, at least i can let some steam off now.

I think 2010 and 2011 were more entertaining seasons than 2012 and 2013, but what are you going to do. Hopefully the teams more noted for their attacking prowess (Cowboys, Tigers, Warrior etc) are stronger next year with hopefully the Eels and Canberra returning to decent form. Give me a year without the Storm and Manly being in the Top 8 and it will instantly become my favorite.

Nice post matt, It's always worth focusing on the positives which always outweigh the negatives, well, at least from a Queenslander's point of view.

enjoyed the season and i'm a raiders fan. League is just full of whingers, same thing every year. Those whose team didn't make the finals come out and have the annual "worst year in RL history, game is is soft and boring" whinge.

Johnno, maybe you'd be happier after you get some takeaway. And we will all be happier the day you learn to use paragraphs :-)

Worst season ever in my 25 years watching rugby league 1988-2013. The first season in that 25 years time-line, where i can say the NRL was boring this year. Wow it's been tough to watch. Actually i haven't watched this year. After the Paul Gallen stuff at SOO that was blown out of proportion, the game has gone boring and soft. Or should i say even softer, such high expectations this year after the $1 billion dollar TV deal was signed last year, but it hasn't progressed, for multiple reasons. I liked the 1st game of the year Souths VS Roosters, at Allianz that had fire in SBW comeback, that was most exciting game of the year. But 2012 was a much better rugby league season. More exciting attack, and the shoulder charge was part of most of the year.

NRL fans dont like it either, and it has become a problem only this year . Young players are looking at Sonny Bill and watching Gussy bend over backwards in his love affair with this code hopper and thinking, that will be me next. Agree, something needs to be done, shutting the gate after Falou defected would have been a start, but again, the code lost the plot and dragged it's tail through the mud only to introduce kids, running amuck, part 1. Wonder how many parts the code goes through before some real change is made. It normally takes 3 years. it's not" the Crying Game" it's the "Waiting Game".

Yes we have had plenty of negatives. Now go away and write an article about the positives. - SBW being nearly as good as the hype - Souths showing their ressurgence was not a one season thing - Greg Inglis - The Billy Moore XXXX adds, and the 8X commemorative can. - The Nth Qld run home - Fifita in Origin. He was brilliant - Albert Kelly at the Gold Coast finally getting his life in order and playing the footy that we all hoped he could - the Panthers maybe turning the corner - Wherever Anthony Milford plays he will be great to watch - Dally Cherry Evans - Jamie Lyon continuing to be a superb club man - NSW really need him to be available - The Roosters-Souths final round match. A cracker - Big Willie soldiering on - a brilliant first weekend of finals to look forward to. - Corey Oates - Corey Parker still offloading at 56 or however old he is - Michael Jennings getting back to his best - William Hopoate on his way back - on 12-24 months this may be seen as the moment NSW won State of Orign again. - The Burgess Brothers - A World Cup And of course Qld continuing to break records. So it's not all bad. The Game will go on. What more do you want?

4) Too many players (and coaches!) breaking contracts for whatever reason mid-season. It hurts fans the most. This is something that many of my "AFL" friends just cannot understand about the NRL. Contracts aren't worth the paper they're written on...and the NRL continually allow it.
