NRL must move on from Cowboys drama

By matt dunbar / Roar Rookie

After Saturdays game and with conspiracy theories running rampant, I would like to ask what Cowboys fans think should happen with the realities that face the NRL vs what will happen.

We all know about the seven tackle try and the hand of Foran the year before.

To me its a bad result. Shocking, considering the number of officials on the field, not to mention the 13 guys running around in white, blue and yellow.

Even more unbelievable is that Jonathan Thurston, a man that likes to get chatting to the men in pink and tell them what they are doing wrong, didn’t talk to the referees right after it was scored and asked for it to be reviewed.

Surely he can count to six?

The comments from Brent Tate, Neil Henry and Thurston didn’t help their cause much either.

Yes they were gutted from losing a close game, but it comes across as sour grapes.

Some of the comments were downright accusing the NRL of taking them out of the finals without one shred of proof.

They are lucky the NRL had to cover for an appalling refereeing decision and that they won’t be fined.

But to the fans – what should happen? Replay the game? Give the win to the Cowboys? I can’t see them getting anything but a stumbling apology and the promise that it won’t happen again. The ref will be dropped, we move on.

The Sharks didn’t make the referee award them seven tackles, it shouldn’t come back on them.

If a replay is what you want, when? The finals is in full swing and they risk disrupting the whole finals series for it.

The NRL would stand to lose more money and standing with public.

An investigation? It won’t find anything.

If, and it is a big if the NRL has it in for interstate teams, nothing would be written down or have any evidence of it.

All an investigation would bring is referees to do some basic maths courses.

What about the interstate clubs leaving the NRL (has been tossed around by some on this website)?

This is at the more ridiculous end of the outrage, but if someone has the money to do it go right ahead. Nothing would benefit rugby league more than another Super League war.

I’m sure that some that want a breakaway comp haven’t thought about the cost and logistics of running a comp. Plus the legal and insurance obligations, then having to have enough talent to run around.

Super League one nearly killed the game, I don’t think we need to try and kill it again.

Over to you sports fans. What do you think will happen vs what will happen?

With some of the comments they uttered they are lucky they are not being sued for defamation!

Move On?? what rubbish. Fix the problem. Either rematch or reverse the try. Otherwise all credibility is lost in the game.

Actually, you've got it backwards. The cowboys had 72 minutes to overcome one bad decision that led to points. They failed and proved themselves therefore unworthy. If the 7 tackle try had happened in the last 8 seconds instead of the first 8 minutes, then you'd have something to whine about, but it didnt.

After the Storm being dudded and the Cowboys drama, mixed with all the money and betting sponsorships, plus widespread drug cheats. The game is not as much fun or as pure as it once was

So in the last 26 years, 30 Sydney teams and 22 non- Sydney teams have competed in the gf, including seven Queensland teams. Considering up until 95 there was only one qld team and only two until 07 I'd say that's a pretty good strike rate in a mostly 16 team comp. Only six all Sydney gf's in this time period. One in the last eight years. 3 in the last 16. Basically since the cowboys joined in 95 there has been three all Sydney gf's, yet about 70 % of teams come out of sydney. Conspiracy theory? Surely the nrl could do better than that. What are u queenalanders on anyway??

I don't really see how its much different to a try being allowed for improper grounding, a forward pass or a dodgy high ball contest. The refs get em wrong every week. What are ya gonna do, replay every game where a try is proved to be not a try?? Youd be replaying every game. Give the game to the other team? i guess then that obstruction in game two and gi knock on game one gives the blues the series in 2012.... Yes the nrl conspires against Queensland yet they have let them win eight series in a row. Surely Big Mal or Jt would be found dead by now to stop the rot.. If it WAS called a no try doesn't mean the cowboys would have won. The whole course if the game would have changed. Instead of kicking off and the sharks getting the ball on their try line, the cowboys have a zero tackle. Then they knock on first tackle and sharks score or Bowen scores a length of the field try. Who bloody knows!? It happened. Get over it!

Cronulla had 72 minutes to prove they did not need a seven tackle try to win the game, but they couldn't do it. The Cowboys scored 18 legitimate points and the Sharks 14 legitimate points. That makes the Cowboys the higher scoring side, the winner. The NRL can make all the excuses they like and all the apologies. It will NEVER happen again. Empty words, maybe just like it wouldn't happen again like last years last years knock-on. The greatest game of all will become the greatest farce of all as the NRL does not have the guts to stand up and right a wrong. And then there are the comments from Greenberg on Saturday saying that we shouldn't even be talking about the seven tackle controversy but instead of the great day of rugby league and all fans would have gone home more than happy. Greenberg has proven he is incapable of handling a controversy of this magnitude and he should do the decent thing and resign, if not, the NRL should sack him.

Yeah... good luck with that mate. Look, my favourite game is Rugby Union, but anyone who thinks Rugby League is dying is either 12 years old, suffering from dementia or just a straight up ditz. Seriously, when Union went pro and League was going through a genuinely dangerous period (ya know, the Super League war that almost killed it) we all thought Union would take the best talent and become the bigger game. It didn't, because the simple fact is that League is a bloody resilient game and it takes more than a couple rule changes or bad refereeing decisions to kill it off.

Here it is again for the so called "7 tackle try" conspiracy theorists.... ref error but justice prevailed. If you take out the ref errors = Sharks win. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQTKgkMLMkI

A simple ref error early in the first half that contributed to a try being scored in a close game and the Cowboys are claiming an NRL conspiracy. Please. Just. Get. Over. Yourselves. YOU LOST OVER 80 MINUTES COWBOYS! Seriously.... what a pack of whinging sooks. I'd get it if they'd lost to this decision on the buzzer, but THAT early in the game and you're claiming it cost you the match? All it did was put the game pack on an even keel. Want to win finals footy? Then you have to hold your nerve through bad decisions and still make your tackles!

I'm not usually a cowboys supporter but have watched the obvious mistakes from the referees now for two years straight . And given that 7 tackles is a blatant breach of the rules .and that no one can dispute! But all the Nrl offers is a apology!!! Can you imagine what would happen If this happened to the bulldogs there would be riots in the streets of Sydney and everyone no's it ! So to the management at the Nrl you are all gutless wonders and someone in your department is clearly on the take because these things don't happen 2 times in a row! Cleen your rot up or you are going to kill the great came of Rugby league that I love so much.

The game will die a slow boring death and be as popular as netball in the TV ratings, again I have said this before the NRL Committee have f this game. They changed the two very rules that made the game popular, and they did this because they are gods. They did this without player or club or peoples vote. Shoulder charge gone......................Fighting gone....................... and now the game has nothing but drop bears and actors diving and lying down e f time there tackled plz with 12 interchanges the game will slowly strangle and kill the small man of the game too...............................

I think Parr summed it up pretty well in what he said. They want to be noticed at least. They are busting thier guts having to work overtime to keep the club profitable and get rewarded with incompetency and hardly any recognition for what they have to go through every week only to arrive in Sydney to get belted in the penalty count. Read Roy Masters piece, and he has identified the problem as well. It's no good awarding 5 penalties against the cows within the first 5 minutes then expect them to be able to compete. Sometimes they make 30 tackles before they even touch the ball. They get no love from refs in Sydney, it is why they cant get into games in Sydney, and this has gone on for 10 years. If the NRL dont give a stuff about the Cows, tell them , maybe they can join the Rugby Union comp. It is like bending over backwards every week for no reward, it is like bringing through juniors for no reward, it is like following the salary cap for no reward. It is not only the Cows that are unhappy, i hear grumbling from many clubs, and as more and more money is pumped into bailing out Sydney clubs (saints need cash now, Tigers are being bailed out) their will be more and more grumblings and problems for the NRL. Canberra will be next. The code has built a terrible ugly monster, that Monster is Brisbane who is building academies, cutting out other clubs from juniors, why,, ask yourself why have they taken this path, Well look at Brisbane, look at what the code has done to this club, turned it into a feeder club a basketcase. Even the juniors we had were being robbed. They never rewarded this club for juniors that came out of this area, well now they wont be getting their grubby hands on the juniors, so not only will Sydney clubs suffer, but also Canberra and Melbourne who rely on Brisbane for juniors. So neglecting Queensland and the teams and ignoring us up here, we will have to find ways so we wont be ignored, and dont come crying when we have a stacked deck full of superstars. because screw you sydney. amen. Brisbane has spent 6.5 million in Logan, the codes largest to second largest grassroots area in Australia, they are building a brand new academy training facility across the road at Redhill, another 20 million for that investment. This is serious business, and they are not taking any prisoners. The Brisbane council want a successful team, waiting for the NRL is like waiting in que at the morque. Silient. No, this code has stuffed this game, no expansion, no direction, all we hear about is clubs struggling being bailed out, the whole code is now being offered for sale in the xmas basket. Viewers have been reported to have dropped 8.5 percent. Thats lifeline material, that is close to life support. If things dont change and fast, it could be chitlings for this code, because superleague is close to gone. They are relying on the worldcup to restart their heart beat. This is serious, and its about time someone admitted as much, instead of the constant sweeping under the big Sydney carpet.
