The NFL’s premier defences collide in another blockbuster NFC game today at 10:30am AEST with the Seattle Seahawks hosting the San Francisco 49ers. Join us for live scores and updates throughout the morning.

This NFC West divisional match-up has all the makings of a classic game, as both sides are tough, talented and looking to gain the early lead in the division.

Last week, both sides came back from a deficit in the fourth quarter to win their respective games and start the NFL season 1-0. Seattle defeated the Carolina Panthers in a low-scoring, 12-7 victory.

Quarterback Russell Wilson was solid, posting his 10th career game with a quarterback rating over 100, and added 320 yards and a touchdown.

Wilson cannot claim to be the best quarterback in the division – that honour, at least for Week 1, firmly belonged to Colin Kaepernick, who threw for a career high 412 yards and three touchdowns to win 34-28 against the Green Bay Packers.

There was some controversy about the victory, however, as the 49ers were awarded (in error) an extra down after a play in which Packers linebacker Clay Matthews illegally tackled Kaepernick out of bounds, provoking a response from 49ers’ left tackle Joe Staley.

Prior to their Week 1 games, both teams had a strong preseason, with Seattle (4-0) leading the division San Francisco (3-1).

In Week 16 of the 2012 season, the 49ers came to Seattle to take on the Seahawks and the ’12th man’ and were promptly routed, going down 42-13. Russell Wilson threw for four touchdowns and runningback Marshawn Lynch went over 100 yards and had two scores of his own.

Cornerback Richard Sherman, viewed as one of the best in the league, returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown and secured an interception.

One major difference from the 49er team that were blown out in 2012 is the receiver position – the top three receivers (Crabtree, Walker and Moss) from that game are no longer active for the team.

Instead, the sensational Anquan Boldin is atop the depth chart for the 49ers.

In Week 1, Boldin set all sorts of records – first 200-yard game by a receiver in Week 1 since Boldin did it in 2003, first player NFL history to record at least 100 yards on debut with three teams (49ers, Cardinals and Ravens) and most yards by a 49er (note: that includes Jerry Rice!) in a season opener.

Seattle’s defence is no joke, and will not be easily broken.

Sherman averages an interception per game against division opponents, and linebacker Bobby Wagner has had two interceptions in his past three division games.

To add to the drama, 49ers runningback Anthony Davis started the trash talk this week, calling Seattle the ‘She-Hawks’ on Twitter, while quarterbackers Kaepernick and Wilson have made a friendly bet over the game – the loser shaves off an eyebrow.

Seattle have a few injury concerns – defensive starters Brandon Browner (CB) and Brandon Mebane (DT) have been unable to practice this week. San Francisco is relatively healthy in comparison.
