For the Browns, life is like a musical

“Oh… Good. We won,” says the Cleveland Browns General Manager Michael Lombardi, as he slowly turns and fires a warning glance at coach Rob Chudzinski.

Mel Brooks released the Broadway hit ‘The Producers’ in 1968.

It was a story, in short, of two producers who were trying to scam money off investors. All they needed to do was write a musical that would surely fail and then the money would be in their pockets. Sounds easy enough?

Except it didn’t fail. They lost money and went to jail.

After a stunning four-point victory over the Vikings on Sunday, the Browns find themselves in the great position of being in the winner’s column this week.

Great? That’s the right word. I think.

The Browns traded their stud running back Trent Richardson to the Colts for a potentially low first round pick, in a move that shocked many over the weekend.

Then before the dust had even settled, we heard reports the Browns’ two top wide receivers are now on the trade table.

Browns All-Pro left tackle Joe Thomas added to this by telling NFL Media reporter Jeff Darlington, “everything is possible and everyone is on the trade block.”

Looks like we have ourselves a mid-season sale. All stock must go.

The Browns now have two picks in the first and third round of a draft that is loaded with quarterback talent – easily the biggest need for the Browns.

No offence to Brian Hoyer, who played a solid clutch game on Sunday, but he is surely not the answer.

They need a franchise quarterback.

Now, they finally have the ammunition to build a team that can succeed. So all they need to do is fail.

Since taking over this year, the new management have been changing the way things are done in Cleveland. They are selling high and preparing to get the quarterback of their dreams next year.

The number one pick would give them that. Even a top three pick should assure them of the quarterback they want.

They just need to make sure they fail.

Wins won’t do any good, except make a starving fan-base feel a little better, as wins will only give them a worse draft pick in the first round.

So what’s with the unusual score line that seems to indicate a Cleveland victory?

CEO Joe Banner and Lombardi will be a little nervous after that. The difference between a number one pick in the draft and a number 10 pick is huge.

The Browns had pick number four in the draft in 2012. That’s within a whisker of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

Can you imagine Andrew Luck in an orange and brown uniform? But still it wasn’t enough.

If you’re aiming for the draft, then give it everything. Trade Josh Gordon, trade Greg Little – hell, why not trade Brian Hoyer to make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Start your punter at quarterback. Wait… He also threw a touchdown on Sunday. Ok, don’t do that.

The Browns’ producers smile at the team through gritted teeth in the locker room post-match, “Well done boys.”

They turn and mutter under their breath, “Don’t let it happen again.”
