After an agonising 173-day wait since the conclusion of season 2012/13, A-League action begins tonight when Sydney FC host Newcastle Jets in the 2013/14 season opener. Join us for live scores and commentary from 7.30pm AEST.

Billed as the ‘ADP vs Heskey’ clash in the corresponding match least season, neither team nor player let the 35,419 in attendance go home without having experienced a great football spectacle.

This time round, the hype surrounding our now seasoned pros has levelled out and the focus is now on improving on the efforts of last season.

A crowd of 20-25,000 is expected to attend the match, which for the first time will be televised live across Australia on free-to-air channel SBS2.

Each team will be looking to get off to the perfect start as both were left to rue the missed opportunities and ill-disciplines of last season that ultimately cost both teams a place in the top six.

This match will unfortunately be heavily affected by key injuries.

Sydney will be without Brett Emerton (back), Terry McFlynn (groin), Peter Triantis (groin), Terry Antonis (thigh), Pascal Bosschaart (ankle), Corey Gameiro (knee) and Yairo Yau (international duty).

For Newcastle Emile Heskey (knee), Joey Gibbs (illness), Michael Bridges (groin) and Mitch Cooper (knee) will all be unavailable.

After a long pre-season, both teams will be hopeful the hard work has paid off and they can notch up a round one win.

Heading into the first round of the season, its always difficult to determine a clear winner, but alas I have the pleasure of calling the first match of the season on The Roar.

Here’s hoping to another highly successful season and a great match.

Prediction: Sydney FC 2-1 Newcastle Jets
