BREAKING: Holger Osieck sacked as coach of Socceroos

By The Roar / Editor

Socceroos coach Holger Osieck has reportedly been sacked by FFA boss David Gallop in the wake of the side’s humiliating 6-0 loss to France this morning.

UPDATE: The FFA has confirmed that Osieck’s contract has been terminated.

TANNOUS: After Osieck, Socceroos need a manager with belief

News Corp Australia football writer Tom Smithies earlier reported that Gallop had assembled the players and informed them that Osieck’s tenure as Australian coach was over, effective immediately.

Pressure had been mounting on Osieck since Brazil routed the Socceroos 6-0 last month, with the repeat scoreline this morning seemingly the tipping point.

The Socceroos were dismantled by the French, who led 4-0 inside half an hour after utterly outclassing their opponents.

With nine months until the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the FFA will now turn their attention to a replacement.

Former Socceroos coach Guus Hiddink could be in line for a return after his tenure at Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala ended recently, and former Argentina and Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa is another whose name has been mentioned.

Of the local contingent, Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou would appear the most likely to be installed.

The Socceroos have just four days to recoup before their friendly against Canada in London, with assistant coach Aurelio Vidmar to step in for the match.

Gallop advised that Head of National Performance Luke Casserly and National Technical Director Han Berger will conduct a full review of Australia’s World Cup planning ahead of the appointment of Osieck’s replacement.

More to follow.

James b - I'd add Kennedy to that because he is a unique position player and plays at a good level in Japan. Roos also do well when he plays... and Kewel if he gets his form on with Heart. 5 out of 23 'experienced' players and/or impact subs. Good mix.

dasilva - deeper examination of the factors you have laid bare in this article will throw up even more anomalies.Just 3 months ago I saw Berger on TV stating he was deeply worried by the lack of progress being made in the task of getting their 'curriculum" accepted at grassroots level,in fact he had with him a top man called Galustian from the Coerver coaching system started in America in 1984 (note the date) to see if he could offer any advice in getting it "working" When one considers that the supposed Dutch 4-3-3 & small sided games & exercises have a football history stretching from 1957 (Brazilian Formation) and a "coaching aid" first introduced into Australia in 1975, one starts to wonder what we have got for our money?????.Now your "20 year to bear fruit" quote throws up another query. A month ago our D of C informed his employers he would not be around after the next WC ,so is apparently leaving us with a flawed system installation after 4 years & won't be around for the harvest!!!!!!!! jb

Agree completely dasilva. Bozza made this point after the game, as did Sir Clive Woodward (with respect to Australian rugby)...this focus on "performance" (for all our national teams) has overtaken the focus on winning. At international level, winning is what counts. It's what sets the All Blacks apart from everyone else...no matter what happens in each Test, they know how to win.

Will Postecoglou take the job? Well done Melbourne football fans for the record Melb derby turnout tonight. Great game in many aspects and just needed a goal or two to top it off.

Punter, with the world the way it is, the global communication phenomenon and internet and coaching courses and huge exposure to football technical and tactical skills all around the world, a mature football country like us shouldn't be dropping over 30 FIFA Ranking places in 2 years. Something's wrong there and they should all be sacked for their abysmal performances. Some of the senior players should walk before they're pushed.

Yes, if the senior players had any decency and weren't selfishly chasing another holiday at the WC finals, they would retire and give someone else a chance. Holger was more than happy to keep making the dumb team selections.

LOL, at least we aren't standing still. And he has been very consistent with the 6-0 losses :)

Holger was also hired to develop young players for senior squad selection, so there could be a smooth transition from the old to the new, as the class of 2006 is getting too slow at international level. Definitely a FAIL for that one Holger,

I don't think the last 2 team performances are a true reflection of how well Australian footballers can play together as a team. The issue is that Australian football talent is being badly managed, from U15s right up to senior level and is not playing as a team. There needs to be a major clean out at all levels with a huge broom, as whatever they are paid to be doing, is not working. We are the laughing stock of the international football world, which is a shame after our excellent efforts in 2005-06.

We haven't got time to work out who the best players are and give people time to gel and to prove themselves. On the FFA's shoestring budget, we've got maybe 3 or 4 more international weekends and maybe 5 or 6 friendlies strung over 9 months to get a team together than can do any better. Woe is us!

Has Australian sport ever been worst than it is now. Maybe all the administrators should be sacked and get sportsmen who know the game to run the administrations. Lawyers and CEOs with no love for the game are destroying the sports. Gallop you have killed two codes.

The team is an absolute mess. No one has any idea of who to play in the back four or back three. Obviously the defence is the biggest basket case, but we didn't score a goal either. I think I'll go and slash my wrists right now . . . ;(

Absolutely. Under Berger, Australia's youth development has gone backwards. This week our U19s were thrashed 5-1 by lowly Vietnam and will likely miss the next U20 WC finals. Our youth development has been an absolute disgrace under his leadership and we now have no young players proven good enough to step up to the Socceroos and guide us into the future.. There is no quick fix to this and you can hire Tony Abbott to take over the Socceroos and turn back the foreign invaders but we'll still get thrashed in Brazil and have no hope of winning any Asian Cup.

The following players should retire from international soccer along with Osieck's sacking... Lucas Neill, David Carney, Luke Wilkshire, Saša Ognenovski, Mark Bresciano, Matt McKay, Brett Holman, Tim Cahill, Joshua Kennedy, Mark Schwarzer, Jade North, Brett Emerton, Harry Kewell, Richard Garcia, Archie Thompson, Alex Brosque, Scott McDonald. They've all done a great service to the Socceroos already and there is no need to further taint the name of the 2006-2010 Golden Generation. We have plenty of younger players who will thrive as first-team players, and its time for the players above to move on from international soccer. I would want them to continue their club careers, preferably in the A-League, as a final showcase of their talents to the Australian people.

Problem for socceroos is that we have an ageing team that has over-stayed its welcome. The A-league is C-league really and not able to provide quality players and results shows. We are lucky to qualify for World Cup but we need a manager that can sack some senior players past their use by date and build.

Would love to give Devere a shot but he isn't playing for his team. Another that went to Asia way too soon. He could be someone that needs another stint in the A-League because he should be someone that should be considered a future Socceroos centre back but he needs to be playing.

For people who say the 6-0 loss is a reflection of where Australian football is at. That's absolutely garbage It's not even reflection of the potential of Australian football under Holger Osieck where Australia defeated Germany 2-1 in their own backyard. So the potential is there to be able to fight and scrap a credible result against quality opposition it's just that the two 6-0 defeat is a reflection of the team going in free fall I'll end with the discussion that Holger may have loss the dressing room Well I mention back when he was appointed http://www.theroar.com.au/2010/08/27/a-look-behind-holger-osieck-cv/ That although I was cautiously optimistic about his appointment he has a history of player revolts that is a concern He lost the dressing room in Canada when there was a player revolt and he loss the dressing room in Urawa Reds where there was another players revolt. So this was another example under his career of him losing the dressing room (although I guess no signs of "revolt" yet but considering Culina comment about his inside source in the national camp I'm predicting that was around the corner)
