While Australian cricket has been all doom and gloom of late, there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel named Jake Doran.

16-year-old Doran is set to break a 50-year record for being the youngest player to play in the NSW second XI.

The record is currently held by the great Doug Walters, who was three days older than Doran when he set the record in 1963 and went on to score an unbeaten 140 in a colts game against Queensland.

Doran has already impressed many, including former Australian skipper Greg Chappell.

“(He) shows enormous potential as a left hand middle order player in the mould of Michael Hussey,” said Chappell.

“He is an accomplished wicketkeeper who also bowls some handy left arm seamers.”

Furthermore, Doran also captained the NSW U/17’s team for the national championships held in Hobart late last year.

His recorded career stats speak for themselves.

In 135 matches he has scored 3602 runs with a staggering high score of 195 not out. He also has a respectable batting average, for someone who is playing first grade against adults, of 36.76.

He recently played in the under 19s International Series for Australia, a competition which includes New Zealand and India. In his five matches in the series he scored 208 runs.

Who knows what the future hold for this young cricketer? He may one day be leading Australia onto the MCG in front of 100,000 screaming fans for an Ashes Test match.
