The 2013 Melbourne Cup has been won by Fiorente, with Red Cadeaux in second, and Mount Athos in third, Simenon in fourth.

Gai Waterhouse has finally won her first Melbourne Cup. Waterhouse had previously finished second three times in the Melbourne Cup. This is undoubtedly her greatest moment in racing.

Last: Verema – she sadly appeared to break down at the 2000m.

Damien Oliver had Fiorente positioned in midfield throughout the race. When the field swung for home Fiorente, who was second in last year’s Melbourne Cup, came to the outside to chase down Red Cadeaux who was brave in defeat.

This is Oliver’s third Melbourne Cup victory after success on Doriemus in 1995 and Media Puzzle in 2002.

Fiorente took the lead inside the final 200m of the Melbourne Cup and was always going to win once he established a lead.

The Cup favourite Fiorente is trained by Waterhouse at Randwick in Sydney and was imported from England to Australia to run in the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

Since racing in Australia, Fiorente has consistently turned in outstanding performances. This was his seventh run in Australia and his second victory, and the 2013 Melbourne Cup is his maiden Group 1 win.

Fiorente is a six-year-old stallion from the German-bred sire Monsun. His mother is the Irish mare Desert Bloom, who herself is a daughter of the Irish stallion Pilsudski. As such, Fiorente is Irish bred.

He earned his Cup favouritism after an outstanding trial in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley when third. Before that, he was a flashing fourth in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

Speaking after the race Waterhouse described it as “a dream come true”.

Fiorente paid a win dividend of $7.00 on the Victorian TAB.
