The 2013 MotoGP season will come down to the final event this year, with the Valencia Grand Prix scheduled for this weekend set to determine a champion.

Young gun Marc Marquez has led for most of the season but failed to clinch the title over the final few weeks of the year — opening the door for defending champion Jorge Lorenzo to try and become just the third rider come from behind to grab the title in a final-race shootout and win his third Grand Prix championship.

It’s shaping as a memorable weekend of racing and one that won’t be forgotten any time soon, regardless of which rider takes out the crown.

Read on for all the need-to-know information including start times, TV coverage and analysis, as well as the latest on the race for the MotoGP title.

Breaking down the 2013 championship race
Despite leading the Championship race for most of the season, rookie Marquez has failed to clinch victory in the past two events and in doing so, has allowed defending champion Lorenzo to bridge the gap between the two riders.

No rookie has ever won the championship before but, as mentioned above, few riders have ever stolen the title throughout the final race of the season — meaning both riders will have to defy the odds, per se, to clinch this year’s championship.

Marquez will hold a 13-point lead over Lorenzo heading into the weekend, which creates plenty of interesting scenarios for both riders depending on their respective finishes.

In short, here’s what needs to happen for Marquez to win the title.

• If Lorenzo finished first, Marquez must finish higher than fifth.
• If Lorenzo finishes second, Marquez must finish higher than ninth.
• If Lorenzo finishes third, Marquez must finish higher than 13th.
• If Lorenzo finishes fourth, Marquez must finish higher than 16th.
• If Lorenzo finishes fifth or lower.
