All Blacks warn English copycats

By Daniel Gilhooly / Wire

The All Blacks aren’t worried by the microscope they’ve been placed under by English coach Stuart Lancaster, believing it would be mistake to mimic their style.

Lancaster and other members of his coaching staff have attended New Zealand Tests this year, gaining an insight which they will hope has benefits in Saturday’s Test at Twickenham.

All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster says all international coaches monitor opponents closely, although England had enviable resources to send theirs around the world for first-hand analysis.

“He pops up at a few of our games so clearly he’s got an objective and he’s been pretty thorough about it,” Foster said.

“It’s just his way of learning, I guess. Whether it works or not…”

He says Lancaster’s presence wasn’t regarded as a major concern, particularly if he was setting about trying to imitate the All Blacks methods.

Such a tactic would backfire, Foster says.

“It is hard to copy because what we do suits our players. I guess the challenge for other teams is to get a style that suits their players.”

All 36 All Blacks trained without issue in cool, damp conditions on Tuesday.

The only likely selection issues are at hooker and on the wing, where a fit-again Julian Savea is favoured to replace Cory Jane, pushing Charles Piutau from the left wing he shone against France, to the right.

The All Blacks coaches may be tempted to keep the same forward pack that played in Paris, meaning Keven Mealamu would hold off the challenge of fellow-veteran hooker Andrew Hore.

No.8 Kieran Read noticed an edge at training but didn’t think it was necessarily inspired by a desire to avenge last year’s 38-21 loss to England in the equivalent Test.

“You don’t like losing in a black jersey but there are a lot of things that have changed in 12 months and it’s a completely different team,” Read said.

“There’s enough people within the squad who have it in the back of their mind but we don’t have worry about that.”

Good points JimmyB. it was a good game, English really took it to the ABs in the forwards there - which is good, because it shows where the ABs needed to improve their game. Too much firepower out in the back line though, which I thought would prove the case, especially with the English injury list. Piatau is the find of the season, no doubt about that. Jane is going to have a tough time taking the jersey of him.

Hi Coconut, A nice eloquent (if slightly threatening) response ;) Mate let's clear something up right from the start, there are plenty of English tossers, the same as there are plenty of Kiwi tossers. No nation has an exclusive right to being tossers. So I don't doubt for one second that there are idiots on the Telegraph website deluding themselves that England are going to beat NZ. With regards arrogance, well it follows the same path as Tossers, each nation has more than their fair share, a cursory glance on the Roar will tell you that there are more than enough arrogant NZers to go around. With regards the thin skinned business, it's something that I've come to think since visiting the Roar really, I'm not the only one to think it mate. I'm fairly sure that there's some irony in you posting a lengthy response to one of a handful of my posts regarding my opinion that a good deal of your countrymen are thin skinned. I haven't seen you respond to a single one of my countless posts acknowledging how great the ABs are, which sort of backs my point up. It doesn't seem to matter how much smoke is blown up the collective AB backside, it's the odd little negative that is seized upon. Mate I honestly don't consider myself to be particularly thin skinned with regards Pommy bashing. I am completely used to it, although I will admit to finding the casual hatred of the English and England fairly boring. Being a Pom on this site, I am in the minority, if I responded to every little or large negative statement about the Poms, well I'd be doing nothing else mate. If I can qualify where I'm coming from, I don't like arrogance, ignorance or hatred wherever it emanates from, I wouldn't think that I'm alone in that. Finally mate, enjoy the game, you have a great team and I fully expect them to win comfortably (hopefully not too comfortably), in fact I shall congratulate you and your fellow AB supporters now for your teams' victory, because I won't be coming on here during or immediately after the match. I have learnt my lesson and thankfully I will be out with family and friends so I can actually say that I have something better to do...and mean it. ;)

JimmyB, I think thou doth protesteth too much... I've noticed its a favorite theme of yours to call Kiwis thinned skinned, precious (I think is another term), over-sensitive, as if say it enough times makes it a fact. I disagree, and I've disagreed with you in an earlier post. Fact: You are about the only one on this board that tries to make that an issue, save for a few UK trolls and related sychophants jumping on here for a wind-up. I dont believe you are a troll, contrary to an opinion of you I had perviously, however I do think you're defensive, overly sensitive, precious, and thin-skinned about being a Pom. Do you see what I've done there? Now, do yourself a big favour, go over to the Telegraph, a main-stream English news outlet, pick a story related to the upcoming ABs-English game and take a look at the, what I'll loosely term 'comments', to be found in there. Never have I seen such vitriolic, hateful, small-minded, petty, ignorant and classless comments as what appears there. If one was prone to making gross generalisations about the stereotypical Pom, there would most certainly be ample fodder to make the case in reading those comments. Its all there: NZ are poachers, NZ cheat, NZ make excuses, NZ are arrogant (an interesting one), the haka is silly, the haka is cheating, the haka is an unfair advantage, why dont they do the haka in their locker room, the (AB) hubris when they do the haka in the locker room... the list goes on. And this is a main-stream online media publication. You will never read such stuff in such volume (if at all) in the comments section of the NZ Herald, one of the most widely read online media in NZ. I'm eternally thankful for that. The one thing this painful exercise of reading firstly the inane, banal, cut and paste stories by Mr. Mick Cleary (et al), and then the comments by the 'readers' is that you surely, surely must have been taking the piss when you suggested NZ rugby supporters are more sensitive than most. Because no sane, clear thinking person coming from the UK could ever make such a profoundly stupid (forgive me) and demonstrably untrue statement. JimmyB, for the love of the almightly, give it a rest, or I will have to make it my mission in life to throw your words back at you, and hound you from page to page on this forum, though this life and the next.

Tough game this one for the ABs but they have a real reason to be motivated and have always felt the French game was the banana peel game. Having said that the English are big tackle hard and run straight. They also kick well so if the ABs are not abolutely on their game...... Pleased to see Savea back his power will be needed but this game will be won or lost up front. Am looking forward to another classic match between to very good teams- best of luck to both teams Go the ABs

England was never a threat to the All Blacks the mighty Springboks on the otherhand were a completely different prospect altogether. Our great Southern Hemsphere foe has the best record against us therefore it made perfect sense that the ABs saved their best game for our most respected rival. This weekends game will be a worthy watch, but the best game this year was played in Johannesburg.

OB, wow, I don't know where to start. Here goes, now try and keep up Old Bugger. Gavins' post was overly aggressive and poorly aimed and your eagerness to support it unfortunately says a good deal about you. Has it occurred to you, in your hubristic headspace, that England are playing the ABs 4 times in the next 6 months or so and being a thorough individual, he may well want to see the ABs in the flesh and understand their patterns better. Lancaster has always spoken of the ABs in glowing terms and with huge respect. I'm not sure exactly what qualifies you to assume that Lancaster wants to copy the ABs simply because he has watched them a few times, he probably, now stay with me here, it's going to be a bit of a leap for you, he's probably working out how to beat them, maybe, what do you reckon, oh wise one? What is an apologetic rant btw? Also, why on earth are you lecturing me about ranting and then following it with a ridiculous skit on foot and mouth disease. Very bizarre indeed. Finally Old Bugger, you are indeed a very thin skinned individual, an all too common affliction in your countrymen.

"So, who the hell do you think you are to tell me (a kiwi) that I’m thin skinned " He doesn't need to tell you. You know it and have now proven it.

Jimmy In all honesty, I wouldn't know if he's a pom or not and quite frankly, I couldn't give a rat's A whether he is or isn't. But, he offered a comment which IMO, is completely opposite to what Lancaster has been doing. So, who the hell do you think you are to tell me (a kiwi) that I'm thin skinned when the initial troll was about the England team who, after winning 12mths ago, J3 thinks they dont need to copy their opponents, but whose coach was quite prepared to visit NZ and learn the AB's systems, so he could take these back to the UK, to initiate upon his players. Wouldn't you call that.....copying??? So, if these facts are boring you, then that's your problem but do us all a favour and check the facts beforehand because if I want to support a previous post which I did and you, decide to apologetically rant about it, then make sure that your brain commands your foot, to stay firmly on the floor instead of protruding from your mouth, before you rant. Foot n mouth disease.....last time that affected international rugby was when the '67 ABs toured the UK and couldn't play the Irish for the Slam, because of quarantine procedures set-up by Ireland.....you have just re-written history.

Mmmm. Two ripostes from you Mr Rebel and I 'm the angry one. Gotcha. Look, if you thought you made me angry it's ok, anger was far from my mind when responding to your funny attempt at a defensive post. Maybe I'll do a smiley next time so you aren't confused. You bite far too well :). We're backing the same team this weekend Rebel, the mighty AIG Blacks, so lets see some trans Tasman brotherly love. C'mon, you know you want to.
