Bailey, Doolan in runout disaster

By David Beniuk / Roar Guru

Tasmanian skipper George Bailey rubbed salt into the wound of teammate Alex Doolan, with the pair involved in a disastrous runout on day three of the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at Bellerive.

Bailey left his teammate stranded after calling a quick single on the final ball before lunch on day three, the in-form Doolan dismissed by a Glenn Maxwell direct hit for 41.

The Tigers skipper had already pipped the elegant right-hander to a Test debut in the Ashes series beginning next week.

Bailey will continue his tune-up for the Gabba when he resumes after the break on 12 with Tasmania 3-65 in reply to Victoria’s first innings of 383.

But Doolan had looked in superb touch in a typically graceful knock that produced seven boundaries, although he had been bowled by a Clint McKay (1-25) no ball when shouldering arms on 22.

The 27-year-old was unlucky to be overlooked for the Ashes after a brilliant century in his only other Shield game this season.

The winless Bushrangers were all out for 383 on Friday morning, losing 4-44 as they chased quick runs in an attempt to force a result to the rain-disrupted match.

Skipper Matthew Wade top-scored with 119, while allrounder Dan Christian chipped in with a quickfire 43 before Tigers spinner Xavier Doherty (4-62) and paceman Adam Maher (3-88) mopped up the tail.

Tasmania lost Mark Cosgrove (2), Jordan Silk (6) and Doolan as the Vics grabbed the upper hand in the morning session.

Swapping Watson for Faulkner and Doolan for Bailey has a nice balance to it. I reckon Faulkner will be in if Watson can't bowl. I can understand them going with Bailey though if just for the sake of maturity and captain backup. That is an important scenerio given Clarkes situation. But can Bailey survive the Ashes cauldron and score runs, we shall see!

I would pick Faulkner as the THIRD quick. Or fourth and putz Lyon off and include O'Keefe at Sydney. Fourth quick minus Lyon is Cutting in Jack Bird's absence. I'd open with Klinger, Doolan at 3, Warner at 6 and Hartley or Paine at 7.

Agreed, I reckon we should pick Faulkner for the 1st test as I think he will score more runs than Bailey (sadly) as well as function as the fourth seamer.

Clean out the crap time. Watson's smugness on the PM news on being picked as a batsman almost cost me a TV. Sorry Bails, your selection logic is like the Quiney protects Hughes thing. Pick the best young shield batsman and bowlers and stick with them. Like this 21yo debutant http://www.howstat.com.au/cricket/Statistics/Players/PlayerProgressBat.asp?PlayerID=3349

Faulkner top scores in the second innings(run out). This confirms what I have been saying. He should be picked ahead of Bailey(on balance) and as a replacement for, Watson- who should be replaced asap if we are ever going to win back the ashes..Faulkner is at least as good a batsmen as he is a bowler, he definitely now puts Watson on the edge of the shade if he isn't actually in it.

Bails LBW for a polished 16. Lovely strike rate, only faced 13 balls.

Read a remarkably similar article on cricinto. Don't know who to notify about this, or maybe its the same author?

Bottom line is Uzzie must score runs. Lots and consistently starting RFN or looking good counts for zip.

I find it amazing some folks are only picking on Khawaja when he top scored in the first innings. One of the folks here(Shaggy) is also putting Khawaja. down on cricinfo all the time so no surprise there. Lets talk facts, Khawaja was second leading shield scorer last year at the christmas break after Hughes after which he didn't play a single shield game as Arthur kept him as 12th man for the entire second half of the season. Only a few weeks back he was our best Ryobi batsman and scored a match winning 100 in the final against NSW, but for some reason people have short memories. Give the guy a break, hehas had 3 innings of which he got a 50 in one, i am prediciting a big shield season for him as we need both him and Hughes firing. Personally i think bothwill have good shield seasons and we should see them in the SA series after the ashes. We need to get behind our young batsman and stop putting them down the moment they get a low scoring innings.

Agree with hookin, we must pick on shield, I hope bailey does well but without red ball runs he might struggle, good luck to him though as he is a top bloke from what I have seen of Him in interviews

Agreed guys, I am a huge fan of Khawaja and I thinks he will come good, great Ryobi season and he got a 50 in the first innings and hopefully he has a great shield season, as for bailey I hope he doesn't repeat these run outs in test cricket as he has a terrible record of it, feel sorry for Doolan

I was gunning for Khawaja until the Aus A game where he got out very unflatteringly. Now I'm all for Klinger and or Doolan, in any of the three formats. Hughes did great today but somebody who was dropped from the last Ashes shouldn't really get a reprieve for this one. Basically the same team again.

Well said. I too want Khawaja to do well but he must deliver at shield level. Great points and comments.

Folks are miffed at the Bailey selection because he hasn't delivered in the Shield now for 18 months whilst others have.

I don't think Khawaja has ever been given a proper go, only getting 2 or 3 tests at a time, but he hasn't been convincing in his Shield outings so far. Great century in the Ryobi final, but nothing since then. Hughes' only real chance of getting in the team again is as a top 3 batsmen, no way does he come in down the order. Doolan, Head, Cooper, Lynn, and Silk have all been looking very good. Lynn and Silk will definitely be test players in a few years time, but not for a while.

I don't know why some ppl are crucifying Bailey just before the Ist Test. Maybe it was one those times run-outs happened - even at Test level. I have been an avid supporter of Australian cricket since the times of Benaud and Simpson and only lately have the opportunity of watching live cricket cos we have now (2013) TV telecast though at some cost. Give Bailey a chance which he richly deserves. My best wishes to Doolan and all for the future.

Having watched Bailey's first innings against Qld and his innings today, I seriously doubt whether he is one on Australia's top 10 middle order batsmen Good luck to him but at least Hussey and Rogers were averaging around 50 @ debut This guy is averaging late 30s - that is a world of difference

Doolan, Klinger, Hughes, Head etc throwing up hands. Khawaja? Out of the pool. I have more chance of being the baggy green PR manager.
