England earned respect in All Blacks loss: coach

By Duncan Bech / Roar Guru

Stuart Lancaster insists England will embark on their summer tour to New Zealand having earned the world champions’ respect at Twickenham on Saturday.

The All Blacks recorded their 13th successive victory this year with an engrossing 30-22 triumph on Saturday, but England play three Tests in New Zealand next June.

Lancaster believes the hosts will be expecting a tough series.

“I’d like to think we earned their respect. They knew they’d been in a tough Test match,” the head coach said.

“After losing at Twickenham last year there was an awful lot of motivation for them coming into this game, probably higher than most other games they’ve played in.

“That’s a powerful force, plus we were facing a starting team that had 842 caps and that was protecting an unbeaten record.

“To get ourselves to a point where we’re disappointed not to have won is a positive reflection on us.”

England will play the first Test on June 7 with a weakened team due to the English Premiership final being staged at Twickenham seven days earlier.

The proximity of the dates means Lancaster is resigned to being unable to field his first-choice starting XV until the second Test on June 14.

While England’s head coach still regards the series as a worthwhile exercise, he accepts the scheduling issue will hamstring preparations for the opening international.

“I don’t think it renders the series meaningless but it’s certainly not ideal. I wouldn’t have chosen this way,” he said.

“There’s nothing to be done at this point. It was an inherited situation I found myself in.

“We looked at the calendar but nothing could be moved and my understanding is that it was all set in stone years ago.”

NZ routed the Boks. It really wasn't a close game despite the pre-match hype about SA going to give NZ payback for Du Plessis. The quality of the game is neither here nor there.

England did a lap of honour to applaud the crowd as they played the game at Old Trafford and not Twickenham. A bit of research might do you some favours. (sigh)

Hey Jerry; losers also sometimes make themselves look a bit pathetic by running around like lunatics for 80 minutes including being camped on the opposition line for the last 2 minutes of the game, apparently full of energy, and then saying 'the result doesn't count because we were poorly'.

Birdy Not unlike every other SH team that plays rugger against England - they mouth the words and then proceed to become a bunch of ungrateful b.....ds by arrogantly defeating your team. Worse still, these mongrels south of the equator, believe they are entitled to do that....what next, you ask?? It makes you sick!!.....you poor chap. There's a slang saying from the south - it is called "HTFU".....I'm sure you've heard it before??

All reminds me of that lap of honour in Manchester when England won a famous moral victory in not losing too badly. (Sigh). Only England can talk up a loss quite so vigorously. I see they're collectively making their excuses already for next years tour. I guess they won't be able to rely on the *interesting* refereeing we've seen at Twickenham. So no point in sending down their new legion of rolly-polly forwards to flop all over the ball for 80 minutes...

Stuart Lancaster insisted prior to the match that England were "ahead of schedule" to achieve his stated goal of becoming the #2 side in the world before the end of the year. I said at the time that brining up schedules was a brave or foolish move. Now unless South Africa have a disasterous run to the end of the year, it's looking likely England will slip back to fourth. WELL "behind schedule" It's nice to see Lancaster falling back into the defeated rhetoric that defines England's usual place in the world as perennial under-achievers and squanderers of their vast resources. Yep, talking about "lesson's learned" and "earning respect" and "taking the positives". All like music to my ears. He may as well come out and say it: "We Poms Have Been Put Back In Our Box. Normality Has Resumed".

It's to do with the amount of effort each team is putting in, the Wallabies are along way behind the All Blacks in this regard hence why the All Blacks are a bit tired and the Wallabies are "coming right"

Losers cry and winners can what ever they like.. so it doesn't matter what you say. Poms will win an occasional game against the all blacks but that will be it... I am worried about the boks and perhaps Oz if they can get back to normal...Poms , not so much...

Who's claiming a moral victory Jamie? Assuming you can actually read, maybe you should stop being so precious and grow a backbone. No one is claiming moral victories and a massive majority of England fans and the UK press have congratulated the AB's / always write about the AB's as the best team in the world. This desire to find offense when its not there is weird and a bit pathetic

I presume Lancaster was being polite. Personally I couldn't give a rat's wobbly bits whether the ABs or their media groupies and barking mad fans 'respect' England or not. It's a matter of supreme indifference to me and virtually every English rugby fan I speak to. There's an old saying 'It's great to see ourselves as others see us'. Being English and liking the sports that Aussies and kiwis also play it isn't a problem for me. What gets up my nose though is the pathetic bleat that all the anti-English abuse is 'banter'. It would be more convincing if Aussies and Kiwis in particular didn't squeal like stuck pigs when they get a bit of banter back. lso, having taken a couple of pills to settle my stomach after the vomit-fest above about what wonderful sportsmen and respecters of the opposition the ABs are; I can now re-engage by stating that this is absolute cobblers. The ABs mouth the right words, but their actions more often than not show an arrogance, sense of entitlement and hubris that is stomach-churning.

If ENG were to score 4 tries against NZ but lose to a 5-try effort in a game most call epic and one of the best in the modern era, they'd not call it being "thrashed." But your main point is well-taken: ENG is becoming more consistent.

True! Was only observing that it's odd quirk to lose ground to a team you've not lost to in the last 10 tests. Probably playing NZ so much doesn't help! So England is on the way up. Let's see if they can make the next step up. They have depth in the pack; but not at 10-12-13. Hope it happens, because I like it when ENG is strong. Great rival.
