The second of our Group 1 races this evening is the 2013 Railway Stakes, Western Australia’s richest race. Join us for a preview and live updates from 8.00pm AEDT.

The Railway Stakes is a Group 1 handicap held over the mile with $1 million dollars at stake.

It is now the richest race in Western Australia after the prize money was increased to $1 million dollars back in 2007.

The million dollars on offer attracts the Eastern state trained horses, with six interstate horses travelling west to tackle the Railway. Including Conservatorium, Smokin Joey, Fire Up Fifi, Mutual Trust and Longport.

Better Loosen Up (1989) and Northerly (2000) are the two most famous horses to win the Western Australian feature race, with Northerly going on to win two Cox Plates and the Caulfield Cup.

The previous two winners of the race Luckygray (2011) and Mr Moet (2012) are back again but must carry the top weight of 58kg. The Kingston Town Classic in two weeks is the main target for them both.

The interstate horses dominate the betting with Smokin Joey the current favourite.

He has recently found his old form after changing stables over to the Wez Hunter yard.

Two starts back he came from last to win the Group 3 TAB Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day in impressive fashion, before finishing second to the spring star Boban in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes.

He deserves his favouritism on that run alone.

The Railway Stakes has been on the radar for Conservatorium ever since his great run in the Winterbottom on this day last year.

He is definitely in form after winning the Group 2 event over 1400m at this track two weeks ago. He has only had the one run at the mile and he finished second to Fire Up Fifi, but meets her better at the weights today.

The ever-consistent mare Fire Up Fifi has once again been racing in good form.

She took out the Group 2 Blazer Stakes at Flemington, before two great runs behind the super mare Red Tracer.

The only problem here is that she has drawn wide in barrier 18, although she doesn’t mind taking a sit at the back of the field.

She takes on the boys for the first time this preparation but gets in well with 54kg. Watch out for her running on from the back, but could it be too late? Let’s hope not.

By far, Mututal Trust is the best each way chance of the race. He has been impressive at all four starts this preparation without winning and the in form Damien Oliver now jumps aboard.

He has drawn well in barrier six and D Oliver should give him the perfect run in transit.
