English get a taste of their own medicine

By Nick Richardson / Roar Guru

The first Test of the 2013/14 Ashes series finished on Sunday, with the Australians securing a surprising 381 run victory, but this amazing effort has been overlooked because of some words said near the end and during the period following the Test.

Both English supporters and press are not only over-exaggerating, but need to learn to take some of their own medicine.

Before you start to tell me how stubborn my viewpoint is, think about all the stick Australia copped during the last Ashes series.

The press were just laying blow after blow into the core of the Australian cricket. The personal attacks on Michael Clarke where disgraceful.

Jimmy Anderson was in his right to go talk to the umpires about things that have been said, but with the reputation Anderson has as one of the biggest sledgers in the game, he should have excepted what he got and moved on.

If Anderson is going to dish out abuse when he’s bowling, he should get ready to take some when he’s batting.

David Warner’s comments on Jonathon Trott were completely unnecessary, he is talking as if he was a world-beater.

Although he one day could turn out to be one of Australia’s finest players, he does not have the pedigree to be making comments he has to back up.

Both the Australian cricket players and fans should make the most of having the wood on their English counterparts, because it could be short lived.

This is the first time we’ve led in an Ashes series since 2006/7, so we should make the most of it and the English should learn to deal with it a bit better – after all it is only the first Test of five.

England need a bit of humble pie for supper and need to learn to accept defeat. In their defence they aren’t exactly used to losing recently.

So Roarers, were the players in the right? Was the sledging too far? Or was it all part of the game?

Aussie cricketers bad sportsmanship/sledging against all other cricketing nations well-known and documented. Bad winners, worse losers

Just as an aside - re sledging, there is quite a difference between somebody saying "you'll get your arm broken", vs "i/we'll break your arm". Only where the sentence is subjective, using the personal pronoun i or we, can this statement be regarded as a direct threat. Anything other is just huff and puff, wishful silly curse, rude or insulting, but not especially inconsiderate in an age old game where it has been accepted practice to spew out insensory comment in a spill of dragon's breath, to intimidate but not to maime or kill. However, i would insist for players to avoid all hate speech as well as anything that can be construed to mean physical assault on the opponent's anatomy.

So many words yet so little substance RWB. You do appear quite upset although your quaint ATM analogy was good for a chuckle at least. Chin up sunshine, I'm sure things will get better.

Mate, I'm disappointed that you think my posts have been arrogant or ignorant, two things I can't abide. If I've said that I think England are a better team in the past, I've said it because I believe it to be true and results over the last few series would back that up surely. I've never stated that Australia are/were crap and I came on here straight after the match to congratulate the Aussie team and their fans on a comprehensive victory. It's fairly inevitable that English and Australian fans will disagree on cricket quite often, but I've never started any personal nonsense, but I won't shy away from it either. I've always respected your diehard nature, but I'm a little bemused by your tone sometimes. With regards to changing my tune mate, it's going to be tough for England from now on, no question, but as a team, they have earned some faith from their fans and it's not unreasonable to expect them to come back hard at Australia.

Jimmy I'm only saying there soft, not that they aren't any good or can't retain the ashes. I actually think its about 50/50 now. I've got a good memory mate, I remember all your arrogant and ignorant posts on here for the past 3 or 4 months. You were having a great old time saying we were crap and england would smash us. Ive noticed you have changed your tune since the end of the test. Smart man. Now I haven't said anything about australia being superior to england, or we will smash you blokes for the rest of the series. I'm just saying Broad Jimmy and Swanny wear nappies when they bat

Ha ha, I love the fact that you feel the need to qualify your statement there Nudge. Mate, I'm not saying that anyone was offended by what Clarke did in the press conference, I'm simply saying that it was very odd and was a clear indication of the fact that Clarke has bought into the Darren Lehmann school of thought when it comes to media relations. Clearly his behaviour is appealing to the part of the Aussie public that thought him too 'Metro', but he's losing respect from the English public who always held him in high regard, even when the Aussie public generally didn't. Still, no doubt he won't care what the English think of him if he manages to win the Ashes. Just a thought Nudge, you and some of your fellow countrymen have been extremely hasty in labelling the England boys soft, weak, sooks etc. You do realise that you've won one test match in a five match series don't you? Oh good, just checking. ;)

You don't think calling someone a "pommy bastard" is racist? No surprise there then. Imagine sticking any other nationality in there and see the reaction it would get. But hey, its the English - its ok, just all banter, good fun etc etc etc. Except its not.

Freddie, I believe that it was none other than Shane Warne who labelled the Australian print media as, 'the worst in the world'. Quite a statement from Warne, the Pommy baiter in chief. With regards the general feeling towards the English, I've noticed that there certainly isn't much affection to put it mildly. This antipathy is often disguised behind the premise of sporting rivalry.

Don, I notice that you've dropped the UK from your moniker. Very wise, you don't want to get confused for a Pom, god forbid ay?! ;)

James, do you not think that there was a discernible difference in Clarke's behaviour leading into this series? My opinion is that it wasn't for the better, however maybe it appeals to you. He was incredibly surly at press conferences, he ended up giving one word answers. If you don't like boorish, how about aggressive, grumpy or confrontational. Again, perhaps these are desired characteristics for the Aussie cricket captain. His 'performance' when he named the England team that would start at Brisbane was nothing short of cringeworthy, with his weirdly triumphal tone. I just can't imagine a single one of his predecessors carrying on in that fashion.

Don Corleone in your view we can pretty much say anything we please to any caucasian? Is that right? Comments are bigoted at best. I've read lots of comments by Aussie Sports fans on the roar in relation to sledging. None of the comments come from anyone who has played professional sport at international level. I would prefer to take my guidance from Aussies who have graced the cricket fields and stood the test of time. Border refers to Warners remarks in less than glowing term and Kim Hughes (if any Englishman is being called a sook this guy is the Australian equivalent I guess, if your on the sook bandwagon) http://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/the-ashes/former-australia-captain-kim-hughes-launches-scathing-attack-on-david-warner/story-e6frf3gl-1226768951939 I have issues with Clarkes comments (he couldn't scare the skin off a custard) and yet he uses the protection of a televised event to make his attack (perhaps he should do it in the car park after the game, oh wait he might get belted there) Warner needs to get a few more tests and runs under his belt and he is the "Ugly Australian" who is an abject embarrassment. The one I take the most issue with is Mitchell Johnson who when Cook and Root were batting showed his lack of class by mouthing off after every delivery not just the good ones. It just became awful to watch and I am sure a lot of fathers would have turned off the TV so that their kids were not subjected to the ugly spectacle. If anyone has show his mental fragility over the years it is him. I hear commenters on the roar say things like "The poms can dish it out but.....blah blah blah" The difference is they do it much less frequently and without the same venom/aggression. I think Cook and 22 year old Root showed a heap of class in not responding to his attacks. People like Matthew Hayden come out in support and call for more.............of the Mental Disintegration crap. What game are we playing? Cricket based on skill, reflexes and agility or some mental psyche out to get a result. Why is this behaviour OK on the Cricket Field but not OK in society. Perhaps the next time someone gets in my way at the teler machine I could mouth off at them and scare them to the point of tears so that I get first use, yeah that's a win. Maybe that person will be your son or your wife, maybe your mother or father. Come on guys sledging just part of the game, isn't it? We all know that boofhead that flouts socities rules and none of us like him. Kim Hughes is spot on abuse, threats in the guise of "Mental Disintegration" has no part in ANY sport and anyone who says it has is that Boofhead we all hate.

"During the build up to this series, he’s come across as fairly boorish" How do you figure that? Sheesh, you can't please some people.

"it’s impossible to escape the awful “pom-bashing” that goes on whenever England and Australia meet on a sporting field. It’s truly disgusting, and it’s proper term is actually racism" Really? I never knew 'English' was a racial classification. Learn something new every day.

"There is nothing so nauseating as another person's nationalism" just about sums this whole petty squabble up. As an Englishman living in Australia, I find the media here pretty hard to bear, and I imagine it is probably the same for Aussies living in England. The only difference I find, is that in the UK at least there is more of a choice, in newspapers at least. Papers like the Independent, Guardian tend to veer away (generally) from the crass baiting of the opposition, preferring instead to actually focus on proper journalism. Here, there is such little choice, it's impossible to escape the awful "pom-bashing" that goes on whenever England and Australia meet on a sporting field. It's truly disgusting, and it's proper term is actually racism. But of course, you can't say that here, because racism only applies to everyone else. The English are seen as fair game, and that's why these contests degenerate into mud slinging, name calling and worse. It's time everyone grew up.

Well, Clarke has always been more liked in England than in Australia for the most part. He's come across well and been very media savvy, however it was notIceable towards the end of the last series that he was starting to get niggly. During the build up to this series, he's come across as fairly boorish and he's certainly appealing more to the lowest common denominater types. It all seems fairly false and a bit forced to me. I can't help thinking that he's been heavily influenced by Darren Lehmann, who hasn't exactly covered himself in glory with his conduct since getting the job as coach. Perhaps Clarke isn't that bad and I'd agree that it's not really fair to lump him in with Warner who is no more than pond life, however his best mate is Warne and Warne is most certainly an average human being. They say that you can judge a man's character by the company he keeps and Clarkey is keeping pretty poor company in this observers opinion.

I keep re-watching the video and I'm struck by a couple things: 1) Jimmy was a long way off the pitch in order to get into Bailey's face. Reason enough for the umpires to come in and ask what was happening. 2) There was the opportunity to say, "nothing, we were wondering where a decent restaurant was is all" Admittedly the finger pointing may have been accompanied by "and Mitchell suggested Ecco, while George there suggested Aria" but given the next exchange I reckon that wasn't what was said. Warner I can wear as a "pretty average human being" but on what basis is Clarke? The fact that Channel 9 broadcast his comment?
