England batsman Jonathan Trott will make a premature exit from this summer’s Ashes tour, with a “stress related illness” being cited as the reason for his return home.
He will be absent from the English set-up for the “foreseeable future”, including the remaining four Ashes Tests, but the ECB and Andy Flower are hopeful of a return in the future, with Flower saying Trott’s “been a brilliant international batsman for England and hopefully will continue to be a brilliant international batsman for England in the future.”
“I don’t feel right that I am playing knowing that I am not 100 percent and I cannot currently operate at the level I have come to expect,” Trott said.
“My priority now is to take a break from cricket so that I can focus on my recovery.”
Trott faced a barrage of short balls in the first Test match, and was criticized in the media by Dave Warner, who labelled his second innings dismissal as “weak”.
These circumstances have been distanced from Trott’s return home by Andy Flower.
“That would be inaccurate, we’ve been on tour for about a month and he’s had ups and downs through that month and it’s not directly related.”
Trott – who has amassed almost 3,800 runs at an average of 46 in a Test career spanning 49 matches – isn’t the first Englishman to leave a tour for this reason; Marcus Trescothick left England’s disastrous 2006/07 Ashes tour before a Test match was played and he was lost to international cricket after that.
Michael Yardy returned home from the Cricket World Cup in 2011 and hasn’t made an appearance on the international stage since then either.
Hopefully, a similar situation doesn’t emerge with Jonathan Trott, someone who we all appreciate watching when he’s on form (maybe even enjoy when it’s not against Australia).

Question for Tristan and the Roar editors. Guys, why have you removed the posts being critical of Trott? Surely, leaving them up, open to ridicule would have been a better course. As far as I can tell, the negative posts have been few and the majority viewpoint has been to admonish those negative posters without it degenerating into name calling. Those posters with negative opinions on Trotty are surely entitled to show their ignorance for the rest of us to see and the rest of us are entitled to call them out on it. Just a thought.
