Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens finals preview

By Adrian / Roar Pro

The first day of competition is over in the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens with today the last day of the competition.

How ideal it is that this tournament is called the ‘Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens’, a dedication to the great man, who shaped the political geography of South Africa.

The Australian sevens team has had a poor outing and is now in the Bowl competition, playing its quarter-final against Zimbabwe.

In the Cup quarter-final, Fiji will play Samoa. New Zealand will play Kenya, Argentina will play France and South Africa will play Portugal.

It has to be said that Fiji would be favourites to beat Samoa after they showed their prowess last week in beating New Zealand by a record margin of 44-0 and winning the Dubai Sevens against South Africa.

New Zealand would be out for revenge and would be favourites to beat Kenya. And bearing no upsets, Fiji would meet New Zealand in the semi-finals.

The other side of the draw will see France play Argentina and it’s difficult to predict who could qualify, with both teams pretty much on the same page.

In the last quarter-final hosts South Africa will play Portugal, who has qualified for the first time.

For South Africa, this would be an emotional tournament on the back of the passing away of Nelson Mandela and South Africa will be in full force to win this tournament as a dedication to the late Nelson Mandela.

One thing for sure is that the tournament’s final day should throw up a few surprises and exciting Sevens rugby.

Harry, as a student of the game, not sure if you have read the following articles - One on a Coaches perspective, an interview with Steven Hansen http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/9490759/Q-A-with-the-All-Blacks-coach-Steve-Hansen Two for those who are writing off McCaw for 2015 - an interview with Richie McCaw http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/9490858/Richie-McCaw-If-my-form-fades-I-walk-away You may have read these already but it also might help in you to "understand the AB" for your thesis with biltongbek! .... The All Blacks know you guys are coming!

Bedsville is calling!... thought my late nights were over following the end of the November EOYT's but I guess not but will record the rest to watch later, though somehow I need to curb the urge to look for results beforehand!

BB's defense, tackling excellent, and they are scoring. Kicking/ converting needs improving. Kwagga Smith looks to be a good find.

Ordinarily not a Sevens fan; it all looks like bad rugby habits. But I'm back in warm SA and loving this PE tourney, because it helps our people come together, and the Blitzbokke are tackling! That may prove the difference.

Way for Michael O'Connor to look at Aust 7s team is - how many of current team can make it to NZ 7s Team. Answer, perhaps Shannon Walker only. ARU website boasted about current crop signing long term contracts. Absolute waste of money for team lacking speed and devoid of X-factor. No wonder we playing in BOWLS comp. Surely, we can have some other coach that can develop better players and playing style.

Agreed RT, following their last few games I was certain Fiji would prove SA's undoing - now they'll probably face the AB's again, the old foe

Great spectacle but to big a mismatch to be a contest. Argentina will be tougher but I do not think they will hold a candle to this very good SA side. Having said that, the 7's are a great leveler, team not competitive in the 15 man game can be a definite threat at this abbreviated version of the game. Samoa are the dark horse, their semi against NZ will be interesting.

Not only a whitewash Adrian, but they are annihilating Portuagal, what a mismatch! I also think that SA feared Fiji more than any other side. With Samoa upsetting Fiji, I think only NZ can challenge SA but the Kiwi has not played to their potential this tournament, should be interesting.
