Grant Wharington believes the perfect scenario is emerging for his supermaxi Wild Thing to claim overall honours, as he prepares to celebrate his 25th Sydney to Hobart a year later than expected.
The significant landmark was put on hold last year when his supermaxi was sensationally excluded a few hours before the start due to paperwork issues.
With Wharington on Tuesday declaring that side of things was “done and dusted”and he had signed off on everything, he was bullish about his ten-year old boat’s prospects.
He believes they have a chance of both line and handicap honours, though the latter is his main target.
“The scenario for us is pretty much perfect,” Wharington told AAP on Tuesday.
“If it (the weather forecast) pans out the way its currently looking, we think its a very favourable forecast for us.
“Its ten years since we won line honours, we’d love to think it could be our year to be able to win it overall.
“That’s what our focus is on and we think our preparations have been great.
“We’ve got a downwind sail to replace the only sail that hadn’t been replaced when we rebuilt the boat last year.
“We’ve essentially got all new sails and all new gear on the boat and the boat is in absolutely excellent condition.
“We’re very excited about our prospects and look forward to getting to the start.”
Wharington pointed out his boat was significantly lighter than rival supermaxis Wild Oats XI, Perpetual LOYAL and Ragamuffin 100.
