'Aussie' Smith makes Liverpool debut

Australian-born left-back Brad Smith has made his debut for Liverpool in the English Premier League club’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea.

The 19-year-old defender from Penrith came on in the 60th minute for Joe Allen on Sunday.

Smith, who moved to the UK at 13 and played for England at Under-17 level, is eligible to play for both Australia and England.

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is believed to be keen to scout Smith when he visits Europe in February.

The Socceroos left-back spot is up for grabs and the opportunity to play for Australia at the Brazil World Cup in six months could tempt Smith, who is no chance of playing for England at the 2014 football showpiece.
