Knights have to look after Packer: Bennett

By News / Wire

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett says the NRL club has a duty of care towards Russell Packer and his family after the new recruit was sentenced to two years in jail for assault on Monday.

The former Warriors prop moved to Newcastle ahead of the 2014 season after signing a three-year deal with the Knights but his future is now very much up in the air.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Bennett stressed Newcastle did not condone Packer’s behaviour but that the club had an obligation to look after the 24-year-old and his family.

“Russell arrived in Newcastle prior to the official start of pre-season, didn’t attend a formal training session or a function and hasn’t played a game for our club,” Bennett said.

“Russell acted independent of the club, our players, our staff, on the night of the incident.

“Russell has acted inappropriately, no one is arguing that fact, however we as a club still believe we have a duty of care to Russell and his family.

“Once the legal process is concluded, we will make a decision and discuss that with Russell before making it public.”

Packer’s legal team have launched an appeal against his sentence after he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and failing to leave a venue.

The appeal will be heard on February 11.

You too Muzz ... I think they've sacked Packer, but I hope that does not mean his wife and children are penalised by his bad boy behaviour ... Watching the tennis and hoping the Aussie's get through, they certainly know how to make it hard for themselves ... I have a soft spot for Tommy Haas, hope he wins later this arvo ... The Aussie's have tough draws ??? Hopefully Rafter, (born in Mount Isa), and Hewitt do well in the doubles ...

I don't work in a school room, I work in an office and my vocation is finance and human relations ... I had a Principal once ask me to type a letter from one of his teachers, apologising for the horrendous spelling and grammar errors, "don't apologise to me, apologise to the 30 children in his class", I said ... Nothing much has changed in 30 years, as is why "the system" is still in a shambles - so good to know you have come through unscathed, some are not so lucky ... I'm far from being pompous, nor lecturing, and I don't feel a need to defend myself, you don't know me well enough, nor me you, but what you need to understand is that I'm not easily dismissed, at someone else's request or as it appears demands ... So whose really being the pompous one ??? I certainly won't mind closing off this topic of conversation, in a respectful manner ... The balls in your court !!!

You accuse me of putting myself on a pedastal yet feel obliged to preach to me about how much you know about league, people, life, everything. You state that you can't read between the lines or profess to know me BUT then say how you have experienced a lot of people "just like you"??? Spare your pompous lecturing for the school room. Once again, move on......

No, I'm just expressing a point of view ... I've been in school administration for 30 years, I'll leave it at that ... I can't read between lines, nor do I profess to know you, but I've experienced a lot of people just like you, and I didn't like your retort ... You don't have to agree with me, my advice or have to apologise ... Not sure if Johnno gives a fig what you or I think ??? Hope not !!! Have a great day and enjoy the Tennis ...

Don't you think you are over-reacting a tad? What, exactly, is the brush I am tarred with? You must be an incredibly perceptive individual to have someones entire character and personality worked out from one TIC post on a forum. I bow to your superior intellect, humbly beg your forgiveness, blah blah blah. Whatever mate....move on.

No MB, look down ... Perhaps you and I have a whole different perspective on league and life and being civil ... I can tackle anothers point of view on league as good as anyone, but I have a low tolerance for bullies or the ideal that you put yourself up on a pedestal just because of your literacy skills ... I thought Johnno's points where not only valid, but intelligent, irrespective of a few errors ... It might pay you not to expect that every league supporter is tarred with the same brush as you ... I've been in league circles for 50 plus years and I've been privileged to have had many positive experiences and enjoyed them with others, just like me ... Rugby League needs people to build the game, not bring it down ...

I notice the diatribe from the self-appointed morals police "I'mastormtrooper2" has gone....................."a real pespective on things that are important, tolerance and forgiveness"........really?? On a Rugby League forum?? Get a grip mate!

I'm all for someone correcting those who make incorrect comments on any topic ... But if you think "taking the piss" out of someone over a typo, spelling and or grammar error makes you a better person, then go and take a long hard look in the mirror ... Have you not been listening to the media and the government, Australia is not doing so great in the literacy stakes - Perhaps you might put your hand up to help them with that problem, rather than bagging Johnno ... Some of the world's greatest achievers are illiterate and or under-educated ... Frankly, I'm a little disappointed your bragging that you're Maroon Blood ... To get a real pespective on things that are important, tolerance and forgiveness, I encourage you to see the movie, The Railway Man ...

I think you missed the point......taking the piss out of Johnno and his neverending rambles. I'll put a giant (well, if I could make the font bigger) TIC next time to avoid confusion.

The man is in jail for obvious reasons ... A duty of care to his wife and children - YES ... One should hope Packer will take up every opportunity to be rehabilitated whilst serving his time ... There are many more important things in ones life than sport, and it is wonderful when someone can find a way back to be the best they can be for their most important asset - FAMILY - I hope they are all on board to support him ... Perhaps the Knights believe it is in his best interest that they support him and them in this endeavour ...

Inglis also had to donate a substantial amount of money to a Womens' Refuge as a result of the court case. The victim had a massive black eye. Cowardly stuff.

OK time to clear some misinformation: Bird was acquitted of all charges, you cant get a slap on the wrist if you didn't get charged. While he did cut his girlfriend, she was found to be the aggressor in the situation and his actions were non-intentional and in self defence http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/bird-free-as-judge-unravels-web-of-lies-20091125-jruq.html Greg Inglis was found guilty of an "open hand push" against his girlfriend, but escaped conviction by accepting a diversion order. While violence against women is a despicable crime, the fact that Inglis escaped conviction (especially as such a public persona) suggests his discretions were minimal. http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/greg-inglis-avoids-conviction-over-assault-charge-20100412-s2lg.html In a happy note, the two re-united and are now married.

Do you have any statistics to back that up? It has to be pretty bad to be worse than being punched multiple times, losing consiousness and then being stomped on! You would hope for this type of crime that prison would be automatic - a crime that could easily have been permanent brain damage or death. One of the worst comments was tweeted from Warrior prop Ben Matulino - "Tough times for my good friend and his family. Always got you my bro," - better to stay silent after such a cowardly act and think a bit about the victim.
