Samantha Stosur takes to Rod Laver Arena tonight for her highly anticipated clash with Ana Ivanovic from Serbia. Join us for live scores and commentary from 7.00pm AEDT.
This mouth-watering third round encounter involves two former Grand Slam champions who are on the verge of returning to their best tennis at Melbourne Park this year.
Head to head Stosur leads 4-3 with three victories in their past four matches but is seeded a couple spots behind Ivanovic at number 17.
Both players are coming off straight-sets victories leading into tonight and will be putting their best foot forward to try and book a date with Serena Williams in the next round.
Ivanovic is riding a wave of momentum at the moment after taking down the world number Williams in Auckland last week for the ASB Classic and took just 56 minutes to tear apart Annika Beck on Wednesday.
The 2006 French Open Champion and former world number one will have to raise the bar again tonight if she wants to counter Stosur’s serve and form at the net.
On paper, it is hard to separate the two but Stosur is well overdue for a successful Australian Open, having only been past this point twice after 11 attempts at Melbourne Park.
Stosur has the weight of a nation on her shoulders but looks to be thriving off the pressure this year so I’ll hedge my bets that Stosur will join fellow Aussie Casey Dellaqua in the fourth round.
Stosur in three sets.
