Tomas Berdych vs Stanislas Wawrinka: 2014 Australian Open semi-finals live scores, blog

By Alan / Roar Guru

Stanislas Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych clash for the right to appear in their first ever Australian Open final. Join us for live scores and commentary from 7.30pm AEDT.

After knocking out reigning Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, Wawrinka knows that he now has a terrific opportunity to make his first ever grand slam decider when he faces Berdych tonight.

Wawrinka has a strong record against Berdych, winning seven of the 11 matches he has placed against the former Wimbledon finalist.

In their only grand slam meeting last year, Wawrinka got the better of Berdych in four sets at the US Open.

Berdych however is in fine form at the moment. He has only dropped one set thus far at the Australian Open and is also coming off a fine victory over David Ferrer.

Since helping the Czech Republic register victory in the Davis Cup last year, Berdych has since developed his mental focus in matches, and he will need to remain focused big time tonight against Wawrinka.

Overall, both of these players are very evenly matched when it comes to firepower. Berdych and Wawrinka can both hit winners off the forehand and backhand side and both can secure plenty of aces off their quick and powerful first serves.

Wawrinka however does possess a slight edge in movement. The Swiss star at his best covers the court better than Berdych and this may prove a telling factor tonight.

Whether Wawrinka will be at his best against Berdych however remains to be seen. The no. 8 seed used up a lot of energy against Djokovic and it will be interesting to see how well he has recovered from his marathon quarter-final victory.

If Wawrinka does start slowly, Berdych possesses the form and confidence on the board here to put the Swiss player to the sword.

Wawrinka however is the more complete player at his best, and if he showcases the form that allowed him to defeat Djokovic, he should do enough to progress to his first ever grand slam final.

I'm absolutely rapt. I have felt for a while that Wawrinka has deserved more than he's been able to get for himself in his career. He's stepped out of Roger's shadow well and truly. Now he's into the Australian Open final with a shot at glory... Aw, hell, I hope he wins this thing, even if it means I have to support against Rafa.

Wawrinka continues on his winning ways now and will now rest and wait for either Federer or Nadal in the final. Wawrinka at his best can certainly challenge either of tomorrow's combatants. If he can defeat Djokovic in five sets, he can certainly beat anyone on the ATP tour on the biggest stage. Berdych played well thorughout the match but poor serving in the third set tiebreaker in particular really hurt him in the end. Thank you for your company tonight and Join us tomorrow for the epic semi-final between Nadal and Federer on The Roar. Wawrinka 6 6 7 7 Berdych 3 7 6 6
