Sun Herald Tour defending champion Calvin Watson was certainty not the favourite 13 months ago.

It was through a hard (and extremely hot) stage one, spent in a breakaway on with other youngsters Aaron Donnelly and Josh Atkins from New Zealand, that he managed to save enough time to claim overall honours.

It was a typical case of ‘fortune favours the brave’. Watson was brave, and it resulted in him placing second on the stage, putting over two minutes into the peloton and claiming GC overall.

This was a significant factor in him landing a contract with the World Tour Team Trek for 2014, alongside some of the very best names in cycling.

I had a small discussion with last year’s defending champion Calvin Watson:

Sam Hill: How are you feeling this year compared to last?

Calvin Watson: I am feeling quite good, however in terms of comparing it to last year it’s definitely different circumstances.

With the change in dates, the Sun Tour is now after a solid start to the year. Having done the Nationals and TDU [Tour Down Under], I feel as though I have some good race condition.

So fingers crossed I am feeling stronger than last year. Though you never know until you pin that number on and get racing!

So who is your pick for Arthurs Seat and for General Classification?

My pick for the Arthurs seat stage would have to be Simon Gerrans! How can you look past him! The way he was racing at TDU shows what a class act he is.

The whole Orica-GreenEDGE team will be strong. Even Simon Clarke and Cam Meyer will be ones to watch on Arthurs.

Garmin riders Nathan Haas and Rohan Dennis will also be big threats!

I look forward to trying to compete with these guys! Let’s see how it goes.
