Sam is not stabbing Souths in the back

By A View From the Top / Roar Pro

Rumors abound that Sam Burgess is seeking a release from his South Sydney Rabbitohs contract to return to the UK to play rugby union.

As a result he has been mercilessly attacked by the rugby league community for being a ‘dog’ and ‘stabbing Souths in the back’.

Essentially the (source-less) reports without quote or fact suggest that a deal has been agreed with rugby club Bath and all that is left is for a transfer fee to be negotiated.

Despite denials I believe the old saying ‘where there is smoke there is fire’ rings true in this case and 2014 will be Burgess’ last at the club.

The first point I want to make is that Sam Burgess arrived at South Sydney in exactly these circumstances via a release from his Bradford Bulls contract.

Furthermore South Sydney also secured the game’s premier player Greg Inglis via a release from two contracts – from the Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos, while brother Luke Burgess was contracted to Leeds when he made his mid season move.

What’s more is that in this time Souths have released local juniors such as Shannon McPherson, Nathan Peats and Beau Champion from contracts, often against the players’ first preference.

Other contracted first graders to be moved on by mutual agreement in this period include Jeff Lima, Jamie Simpson while a number of others have been moved into retirement.

Let’s get this clear – Sam Burgess is not leaving South Sydney high and dry.

He is not stabbing the club in the back. And he is not fleeing the club in the dead of the night to play rugby union in France.

I have always argued that what Sonny Bill Williams did all those years ago was not wrong. The problem was how he did it and if the story is true (which I believe it to be, despite denials) Sam has gone about everything in the correct manner.

Just as he did all those years ago while seeking a release from Bradford.

For fans to log onto social media and attack, abuse and bag a person out that has done so much for the club is the true disgrace in this story. It is disgusting the ways fans harp on about loyalty while they are mercilessly kicking one of their own square in the guts.

Loyalty as with contracts is a two way street and you can’t expect players to be unconditionally loyal to a football club without reciprocation from either fans or the club itself.

A number of years ago Sam Burgess took a pay cut for an opportunity to travel half way across the world and test himself in the world’s strongest rugby competition.

In that time he has cemented himself as the game’s premier forward, contributed immensely to South Sydney’s most successful era in forty years, played through the pain barrier of countless injuries and become this writer’s favourite ever footballer.

To see him leave South Sydney would shatter me. Anyone that knows me knows how much I love the bloke. But the truth is he doesn’t owe me, or South Sydney, anything.

Unfortunately Sam Burgess can’t live his life to fulfil my dreams – I have referred to him as South Sydney’s next Clive Churchill medalist since he arrived in Australia and will back him in again for 2014 – no matter how much I want him too.

If he feels that he can’t pass up the opportunity to test himself as a dual international in two World Cups then I implore him to chase that dream rather then risk a lifetime of regret.

Sam Burgess is a South Sydney legend. He is the greatest forward to pull on the Cardinal and Myrtle in my lifetime and I’m told he has the potential to challenge our best ever. Whether he stays or goes I won’t ever say a bad word about him or his time at the club and I would expect the door at Redfern is always open for him.

For I am told to preach loyalty you should first practice it.

The future is bright at Redfern with our without Sam Burgess.

The culture and influence of ‘Slammin Sam’ will remain at the club long after he has departed and for that I will be forever grateful.

You people cant discuss the actual issue, get caught up in nonsense arguments. Who really cares. Yeah Id say burgess is not really stabbing souths in the back either -- when has he refused to play a game for instance, when has he not tried? They would be worse feats. Though I understand exactly why Satler would not want to hear hide nor hair of him again.

Sam is not stabbing Souths in the back but some feel that he is a definitely slapping them in the face. Bunnies legend John Sattler says - "if he goes, don't come back, just go and keep going" Sam Burgess should be banned from the NRL for life.(foxsports.) Some strong words from one of the games greats.

It was 56 weeks ago that Buzz and The Telegraph 'broke' the story that Jamie Lyon had quit Manly to sign with the Titans. And we all know how that story ended up - with Lyon captaining Manly to a Grand Final. Like this story they reported it as fact and fell back on 'a change of heart' a few days later.

It's not signed seals and delivered yet, Souths still have to agree to let him go. If he wants to play the 2015 RWC, he has to go now, I doubt Souths will let him go this year.Yes I,m probably deluded about this, but the telegraph talked up the hybrid game in December , now their talking up Sam burgess to rugby in February . Trying to drum up interest for their paper I say. There track record about getting these stories right are a big fat zero, Was it not 12 months, the blackest day in Australian sport was alleged to have occured, I'm still waiting for that day. Until it's signed sealed and delivered he is a rabbit till 2016

For shame... No loyalty.. thinks he is bigger than the team.. great player, dirty tactics ruined his rep though. But a game changer non the less. Manly will accept George thats it.. off the bench.

How can you say what Sonny Bill Williams did was not wrong?

Watmough and Gallen are two forwards that sit comfortably amongst the top echelon of the game. It is my opinion that Sam Burgess sits a top of that class at the present time. Some will agree, many probably won't, but again this is a throwaway line in the article and not a core point.

Matt. Greg Inglis was contracted to the Melbourne Storm. Thus irrespective of the NRLs salary cup rules Melbourne were legally obliged to honour that contract unless a mutually beneficial agreement could be reached That such an agreement was reached is immaterial to the debate as such an agreement will also be negotiated in this instance. Also Inglis had signed a statement of intent to play for the Broncos but a contract had not formally been lodged at the NRL when he sent off his infamous 'it's raining' text message to Andrew Gee which ultimately led I him reneging on an agreement to link with South Sydney. Cheers for the woeful attempt at criticism though.

Funny Inglis was trumpeted as a new Broncos signing so he must have given some notice of intent..

I rate Burgess highly, but where did he go in the Prelim final against Manly? He surely didn't stamp himself as the games premier forward on that occasion.

"Furthermore South Sydney also secured the game’s premier player Greg Inglis via a release from two contracts – from the Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos, while brother Luke Burgess was contracted to Leeds when he made his mid season move. " No, Melbourne were forced to get rid of Greg Inglis because they spent years systematically cheating the cap. Greg Inglis never signed a contract with Brisbane At least use facts if you're trying to make an argument

So is NFL - but it doesn't call itself 'rugby'. Imagine if Sam Burgess was leaving Souths to be part of a new football code called 'rugby league' but with completely different rules etc. I bet you guys would be spitting chips and fight tooth and nail not to share the same moniker.

I am 23 years old and just missed the careers of Ian Roberts, Mario Fenech and others from the 1989 era. Since then Spud is the only other name that I can say remotely challenges him. Roy Asotasi was incredibly important to redefining South Sydney and he was immense in his first season at the club but a horrendous run with injuries meant his performances when he did get on the park did not approach the highs of 2008. Do you have anything of substance to add, a name to put forward? See above for a justification of why I (and others) consider him the game's best forward

A game rated by many better judges then myself as the best individual performance in over twenty years. It is not why I rank him the games best forward but an example of his standing in the game. He is the top echelon for athleticism across the games forwards - think SBW etc. But he has the workrate of the games most durable forwards - think Paul Gallen. Not to mention his ability to play 80 minutes, play wide or tight, break tackles at will and pull of spectacular hits. He also has an outstanding try scoring strike rate for a forward. He is the only forward in the game to match the style of the spectacular play with the substance of 20 hit ups and 30 tackles a game. I'm sure you rank somebody else higher but opinions are like.... well you know. Plus they are subjective, I don't think anyone can argue he is in the top echelon of the games forwards though
