The Arizona Diamondbacks ‘host’ the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second game of their double-header at the SCG this afternoon at 1pm AEDT. Log on here for live scores, blogging and commentary.

Last night the Dodgers beat the D’backs 3-1 in a game that saw their star pitcher go through 6 & 2/3 innings with only one run allowed against him. Clayton Kershaw also registered seven strike-outs and only walked the one batter.

He certainly showed glimpses of why he is on the big bucks with a performance that allayed fears his Spring training results were going to carry over into the regular season.

So the Dodgers get the jump over the Dbacks in the series and the rest of the MLB going one and zero.

Today the D’backs will attempt to reverse their batting fortunes and put pressure on the starting pitcher sooner. A crucial element of last night’s victory was the lower pitch count Kershaw carried into the middle innings, while D’backs pitcher Wade Miley started getting into the higher numbers sooner. That, coupled with allowing a few runs, meant the D’backs had to get into their bullpen much sooner.

The Dodgers set up and closing pitchers were also fantastic last night. Brian Wilson and Kenley Jansen barely allowed a sniff of a comeback during the eighth and ninth innings.

So it’s imperative the Dbacks force the Dodgers into their bullpen earlier tonight, perhaps throwing off the plans for Wilson and Jansen to so smoothly finish proceedings.

Certainly last night had an exuberant atmosphere at the ground with over 38,000 people coming to see MLB action at the SCG. Today we get some daytime baseball and the carnival is set to continue.
