Aussies sign up for World Cup in droves

By Ben McKay / Wire

If the World Cup is decided on local support, Ange Postecoglou’s men are set to shock in Brazil.

It seems not even the ‘group of death’ draw placing the Socceroos with the last two World Cup finalists, Spain and the Netherlands, has put off local fans from making the trek to South America.

Of the half a million tickets sold to the international public, Australia sits third for support, behind only host nation Brazil and the United States.

Even Old Blighty might be out-sung by the Socceroos fans, with the travelling English bagging 38,043 tickets compared to Australia’s 40,681.

While Australians will be over-represented in Brazil, the number allocated to locals is less than half the number requested.

Ticket sellers viagogo say global requests for the coveted World Cup tickets could sell out the tournament ten times.

But spokesman Alex Levenson urged those Australians that missed out to only attempt to buy tickets through accredited sellers.

“Never buy a ticket that isn’t covered by a 100 per cent guarantee… otherwise you could be left standing outside the stadium with an invalid ticket, having travelled nearly 15,000 kilometres to be there. That’s not a risk anyone should take,” Levenson said.

Brazilian fans have bought more than one million tickets, with American fans picking up just over 150,000.

Another million tickets have been allocated to corporate and hospitality seats outside the general public’s reach.

Yeah no doubt Ono has struggled this season. His touch hasn't quite been what it was last season. But he has still put in some incredible efforts. Home match against MVFC and second derby come to mind. First half showing in the first derby was insane as well. But not many have been protesting his departure, as much as we appreciate him. Completely right about the upcoming off season. City and WSW with new owners. MVFC and SFC looking for a new superstar.

Agree. First rate send off. Well done to all in the stands at Pirktek. I do think you got the last of Ono's best, however. He has not been the player of last season in 2013-14, and has looked well of the pace in the ACL. Age has caught up with him. The marquees will be a hot topic in the off season. Melbourne City will be in for a big name - two, actually: Aus and international - Victory will have a new Aussie marquee and hopefully a decent international marquee too, and Wanderers have both to fill. Then there's Sydney who surely won't be crazy enough to sign ADP for another season of playing with 10 men for 90% of the game. Sage may be prepared to look for another marquee too, but I hope he goes for a marquee coach instead.

Dan, You haven't even vaguely understood my comment. I wasn't diminishing those people (if indeed their only interest is in the WC) but curious as to whether they are any different to regular HAL attendees and whether or not the WC attracts fans normally outside the football circle. I don't buy-in to "true believer" rhetoric.

around 90k Australians are full season ticket holders of their local A-League clubs. on average over 120k Australians attend A-League on a regular basis. so i would guess that a very large bulk of that 40k are supporters of the local game. i know a ton of general sports fan who have the world cup on their bucket list. in the same way i would love to go watch college football in the US, AFL at the MCG and F1 in Italy, despite not having a huge interest in any of those sports.

I wouldn't think many people out there are willing to spend upwards of 10k on a sport they don't really care for do you?Sure there will be a few who've tagged along for the experience and all power them,i'd say anyone going with a passing interest in football won't be coming back with a passing interest.Going to the World Cup in a football mad country like Brazil won't be easy to shake off once they got home.

Bal It is a point ,I look at it as at least the sports giving people an opportunity to travel to a Non Commonwealth Nation apart from the Wallabies in the Star De France we largely can only associate ourselves with Greater Britain as a nation at sports. If one can afford the opportunity it's most definitely a bucket lister for most Australian sports consumers, Brazil is seen as possibly the spiritual home of the sport. We as football supporters have to be grateful ,how many Australians would go to the World Champs of Badminton in Laos. I'd rarely miss a Wallabies match but dont really watch much Super Rugby it doesn't mean I dont care about Rugby though.

Seriously? Who cares? As long as they're cheering on the guys in green and gold then what does it matter? What a ridiculous comment.

I wonder what portion of those 40K are regular consumers of Australian football (go to / watch HAL, Socceroos Qualifiers, ACL etc.) and what portion are only interested in the round ball for 1 month every 4 years?

Yet again bondy you have failed to understand simple English sentences. I never wrote 'most' peeps don't know what 'the Netherlands' is. I wrote that 'I had actually encountered SOME peeps in this country who have never heard of 'the Netherlands' but everyone seems to know 'Holland''. The 'most' peeps bit referred to people not realising that Holland is actually only one province within the Netherlands. My comments were also not restricted to people who use this website but the broader community. I agree most people who follow football know 'The Netherlands' but not everyone in Australia follows football as surely you would know. Oh and I don't click on links from you, so you're wasting your time added links. I noticed you also never answered my question about whether you're off to Brazil? Well, Are you?

Good question bloomers. Holland is actually a province within the Netherlands albeit historically the politically dominant one. In my experience most peeps in Australia don't know that. I use Holland because it is easier and I have actually encountered peeps in this country who have never heard of 'the Netherlands' but everyone seems to know 'Holland'. A lot of peeps in Australia also use England, UK and Great Britain, interchangeably even though all three are technically slightly different land masses- but hey ignorance is rife. Now the really interesting question? Is your name really bill boomer aka bloomers!!
