Farina out - Sydney FC sack Frank Farina

By The Roar / Editor

Sydney FC have relented to the pressure piled on the club all season and sacked coach Frank Farina.

Sky Blues Chairman Scott Barlow announced the decision after the club’s board met on Wednesday.

The Sky Blues were eliminated from the A-League finals with a 2-1 loss to Melbourne Victory last weekend, and have endured an up-and-down season under the former Socceroos and Brisbane Roar boss.

12 wins, three draws and 12 losses during the regular season saw Sydney FC scrape into the finals, but a first-round elimination forced the hand of the club’s board.

Farina had been at the helm since taking over from Ian Crook during the first half of last season.

He was Sydney FC’s seventh full time coach since the inaugural 2005-06 A-League season.

Farina also reportedly had a clause in his contract which meant he could be sacked if the Sky Blues failed to make the top four this season.

“Frank joined us as coach in a difficult period last season and has always given his absolute dedication and commitment to the club,” Barlow said.

“Frank has shown great integrity and resolve in what has been often challenging circumstances this year.

“I would like to pay tribute to Frank for his professionalism and wish him well for the future.”

The decision made Ryan O’Connell ponder a tilt at the job, before he considered the drawbacks:

That's a conclusion I thought was only obvious to fans of the club, the rest are just happy things seem to go wrong as much as they do. Most members of the Cove say that the Sydney board are cluless, except for maybe Tony Pignata and newly appointed Han Berger.

Frank Farina did a pretty good job at Sydney, should have kept the coach and sacked the Board, they have made so many dreadful decisions for many years, starting at the top. Now they have Mr Berger with them, I suspect he has been part of the bad decisions from the beginning, particularly since reading about his appointment and apparent involvement with Mr Barlow for the past few years. They could have been so much further along with their club if they stopped this constant merry-go-round years ago. Good luck to Frank.

This news is worse for Sydney Football Club with Frank Farina walking off the job. And the Sydney fans will be disgusted about his sacking.

Frank did a pretty good job. This was another stupid harsh decision. Sydney FC were much worse before he came. He actually got them to the semi's. Sydney FC as a club have some kind of Sydney corporate mentality of immediate results or else you're gone. It's not a business, it's a club. It's really disgusting, and there's no way I could even follow or support them. Frankly, it's an embarrassment to this city. This is why Wanderers will always be the better team and have my full support. They have to give a coach like Frank a few years to mould a team together, then the results will come. Apart from Sir Alex Ferguson I don't think anyone on this planet can come in and make them win a premiership straight away. The club is just going from bad to worse.

Agree he handled himself well. I really admired his strength of character, but as a coach he's not quite good enough for the modern A-league

Perception or reality ?.Sydney seem to lack genuine passion. Have been that way for years. It's not that the team does not try to win, not at all, but rather there's a sense that its just a job. The excitement of Del Pierro genius cannot replace the collective lack of youthful enthusiasm. Sydney to me lack spontaneity, that little bit of effervescent magic that makes things happen. There's been more excitement at Melbourne Heart of late, and they finished last. Adelaide have something going on that good to see. WSW have bundles of passion. Brisbane aint so shabby. And on it goes. If image counts for anything does Frank Farina look like a guy who could light a spark in the team, and show them the way forward? Frank too often looks like he should be leading the hearse down the street. The right chemistry is everything. Perception, reality, or a bit of both ?

While I didn't agree with his tactics at times and the way he used players, Farina behaved in a very professional manner at all times, especially given the way SFC management, the fans and media have treated him. Look what it did to Ian Crook. SFC will never have a stable winning, culture while its managed by the same owners, CEO and CFO.

Fadida, he also made the comment that said procession is over-rated. I don't dislike Frank Farina, he had a great career, especially as a player & coached the Socceroos but as Kenny Dalgish found out at Liverpool a few years ago, football has moved on, you either move with it or move out. Farina is an old fashion coach & was found out. Moyes seemed a good guy too & handled himself with dignity, but that doesn't make you a good coach.

Frank is a good man, would have liked him stay on for another season. FC are one o the most dysfunctional sporting teams in the country.

Think Frank was starting to pull it together. Got rid of Emmo, Yao and nearly Carle. For this, I cant help but kinda like the guy. Signings, opportunistic or not, were sound but late. Carle welcome at the Rosellas

Agree Punter. If I recall after the BR game Frankie made a comment along the lines of "I just didn't know why we couldn't break the 10 men down". Perhaps playing a flat 4 across the back marking 1, resulting in your midfield being outnumbered may have been the issue..... Terrible performance after ugly performance with a few good performances in between. A club of the status of SFC needs a coach with a long term plan and philosophy. Not Farina's week by week, throw it together and see what you get plan
