Manchester no longer United under Moyes

By Fra-Dog / Roar Rookie

It has been confirmed that Manchester United have sacked David Moyes. This made me think back about an article I wrote before the start of this season entitled “Moyes to start United life in the deep end“.

It was never going to be easy sailing for the former Everton boss, following in the footsteps of the great Sir Alex Ferguson, but no one could have imagined the disastrous campaign the club has had under their new manager.

Manchester United’s record against the top six of the English Premier League has been dismal – one victory and only six points from a possible 36. Clearly not acceptable for a club with the prestige of Manchester United.

But it is not just the form against the top clubs that has been pathetic. Old Trafford used to be a fortress, but this season it has been a happy hunting ground for most teams. West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United won for the first time there in 36 and 41 years respectively. Swansea City achieved their inaugural victory at Old Trafford this season, knocking the Red Devils out of the FA Cup in early January.

The faith that United supporters had in the new manager at the start of the campaign is all but gone. It was always going to be tough ask, but enough is enough and the club owners, the Glazers family, have listened to the fans. Some critics will say they are being a little drastic by sacking him inside just one season, particularly with the United hierarchy claiming Moyes would be given time to settle in.

However, it is quite evident the job is beyond his qualifications.

Perhaps most concerning of all this season has been the tactics and the way the club played in defeats. Long balls and crosses into the box is not the United way. Red Devils teams have always been known to play attractive attacking football, keeping possession and knocking the ball around the box. This should be a key aspect for the United hierarchy in selecting the next Red Devils manager.

Who knows, a Sir Alex Ferguson return may be on the cards – anything can happening in football. Take Liverpool FC for example, this time last year who would have believed they would be three games away from winning the EPL title?

Didn't Roberto Martinez lead Wigan to relegation, then show up at Everton? Im not sure how you can class 8th in the PL a fail. That's clearly where they are talent wise. Pochettino would be a good choice for a clearly more talented playing group that Spurs have. Certainly be better than Sherwood is for them. Why couldn't Pochettino do for Spurs what Martinez has done so well with Everton?

Runaway champions they may have been but I think it was a fluke with an average and ageing squad. Fergie needs to take a lot of responsibility and blame for United's current situation. He failed to rejuvenate a clearly average squad.

The appointment of Moyes was like the appointment of Hodgson to Liverpool He was an utter disaster that all of us thinking fans could see coming a mile off...only the day trippers and the gimp Purslow thought otherwise... Ferguson screwed United over in 2 ways...he left a team past its prime riddled with dead wood and past it players...then nominated Moyes - an man with zero history of winning anything or playing attacking football... I wonder how long it will take them to recover from this monumental cock up Oh well - I dont care...LFC are back!

Spot on Adam. Add to that Moyes inherited the champions (and spent 65 million on top). Ferguson inherited a work in progress, hence he was given longer.

Fergie left a squad needing rejuvenation. They were however run away champions the season before, and he spent 65 million to strength the squad. Fergie must shoulder some blame for not sortIng out the midfied. Moyes should have been sacked. Woefully inadequate. Had he shown he was tactically astute eg Rodgers last season, I wouldn't care about a 7th place finish. Much like Frankie Farina he showed no such skill.

St Totteringham? Well never say never Fra-Dog, they are a good little mid table club but they can probably get a better manager than David "Mid table" Moyes. I reckon Moyes will go to Newcastle or Aston Villa as both those clubs desperately need a new manager.

I remember the Brisbane Lions went on an end of season tour in maybe 2001 and we're given the privilege of an insiders tour at Anfield to see how the big time English pro clubs ran their training and fitness programs. The Lions were suitably unimpressed at the time at just how far behind LFC were of the Lions own programs and also there were remarks about the surprising unprofessionalism of the players. Italians and Spanish have long remarked how the English aren't as serious in their dedication to their professionalism. Times will have changed in the EPL in recent years but if what you say with regards to Simeone is true then if he was hired by Man U the players could indeed be in for a massive shock.

Really? It was a four horse race at best. Tottenham and Everton we're never in the running for the title. He took the defending champions to 7th in a 4 horse race.

"Dragged into their struggles"? He CAUSED their struggles. He took the runaway Champions to mid table. Any problems with his reputation will be self inflicted. Weak - check, negative - check, conservative - check, tactically inadequate - check, poor man management - check Shout out to to Fergie for an appalling error of judgment. A Bebe, Djemba Djemba, Bellion, Ralph Milne, Kleberson sized error of judgment.

That's a great question Towser that no one can answer unfortunately. As an aside, I reckon Man U should cut the ties once and for all with sir Alex. I just read he would again be asked his advice re the next coach to be appointed. As much as he represents Man U, I think its time for the club to move on and, being such an imposing figure, I think he shouldn't be involved in any way shape or form in the club's recruitment process. We had a similar situation with Guy Roux at Auxerre a few years ago after he had spent 30-40 years at the club. He retired but remained around the club etc. It spiralled down from there and the club is now in 2div. Not saying it always happen but I reckon those imposing figures do inhibit new ones and their influence at the club is so strong that it becomes detrimental to the development of the new staff.

When Ferguson arrived at man utd he came from Aberdeen with a trophy winning back ground, Moyes arrived with a solid 'best of the rest' ability. Not much of a surprise that his style has failed to motivate players

Towser - What about the man who took a bomb wrecked stadium and a sometime second division team in 1945 and laid the foundation for what was to come.During his 25 year tenure he had to re-build a team twice firstly because his first "after the war" team was ageing and he showed a penchant for using young unknown players and finished with a team of internationals but then the disaster ,and he had to start again winning the EC 10 years later with Best Law Charlton et al. By that time the stadium had been re-built and the club was emerging as a power in European football. Not a bad basis on which Sir Alex could build his own dynasty.I refer of course to the first Man Utd legend Sir Matt Busby..Your thoughts?.jb

Why would Spurs, who want to take that next big step and join the elite, want a manager who's shown he can't cope at that level?

If the United players were unhappy with David Moyes, then they will absolutely detest the training regime that Diego Simeone adhere's to.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Southampton's Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs next season. Maybe even taking Shaw and Lallana with him. Moyes will end up somewhere like Villa I think.

I very much doubt Hernandez was ruined by Moyes. He's been at United for 4 seasons and never won the starting spot under Fergie. Nani was already buried by Fergie who was barely playing him in 2012/2013. Kagawa didn't start regularly under Ferguson. Valencia has generally played under Moyes when fit but since his transfer to United he has had a multitude of injury problems. I can't see how Moyes ruined any of those guys anymore than his predecessor. I doubt Little Pea would be any good at any other top 6 club in the EPL. I don't agree that Mata was a terrible purchase. I agree that Fellani was. Fergie also spent 17m pounds on Phil Jones. His last couple of years of purchases outside of RVP were somewhat ordinary. Simeone looks to be a fine new manager. He does have some very good cattle as well.
