18 AFL Talking Points: Round 7

Drawing inspiration from Peter King, one of my favourite American sportswriters, I welcome you to what I’m hoping is a regular weekly feature of talking points from the AFL world.

1. Carlton players are trying to get their teammates injured. How else do you explain all the floating kicks and handballs that gave Collingwood plenty of time to contest what should have been uncontested possessions?

2. It galls me to say this and I hate myself a bit for having to admit it, but Collingwood are a better side then I thought they were before the season began. There, I said it. Now excuse me while I go vomit.

3. Hawthorn must be crossing their fingers in hope that Brian Lake isn’t returning to the broken-down Lake we saw in his final years at the Bulldogs. With the possibility of another six weeks out due to a calf complaint, he’ll lose all the fitness he just regained.

4. Despite the Saints’ early season form, they now know how far they have to go to get back to the top.

5. Port Adelaide are better off in second place on the ladder than having the added pressure of trying to hold onto first.

6. GWS need Mumford back ASAP.

7. Adelaide blew it. I wasn’t going to tip them until they showed me something, I got suckered in by wins over the Bulldogs and Giants, but no more. I am done tipping Adelaide to win anything.

8. It’s time for all the Paul Roos doubters to say they were wrong. Melbourne are starting to play as a team, and look like they have a system in place for the first time in a decade. Yes, there are bad losses to come and plenty of mistakes to groan over, but Roos finally has this team heading in the right direction.

9. Sydney are on the upswing from their early-season slump, but Swans fans shouldn’t get ahead of themselves based on a beat-down of an injury-ravaged Brisbane.

10. Brisbane got an early glimpse of what next season will look like after Jonathan Brown retires, and it wasn’t pretty.

11. I don’t care what Bomber Thompson is saying – forwards are measured by goals kicked, and Essendon’s forwards don’t kick goals.

12. It’s time to admit the Western Bulldogs are not taking the next step we all thought they would after last year’s strong finish.

13. If you want to make any money while tipping North Melbourne games, you need to put money on them when everyone is saying they will lose and never bet on them when people say they will win.

14. If there is anyone still thinking that Gary Ablett Jr is overrated, just watch the fourth quarter again. You could almost hear him thinking “enough is enough” when he ripped the ball from centre and kicked two goals from 50-plus metres out to end any hope of North running over the top of the Suns.

15. Joel Selwood proved how hard it is to keep the captain down for an entire game, coming to life when the Cats needed him in the last quarter after spending the first three quarters looking tired and spent.

16. Is any one player more important to their side then Brett Deledio is to the Richmond Tigers?

17. The western derby is the kind of game Fremantle needed to win to steady their form – tight, scrappy and defensive with some key players still out of the side.

18. The West Cost Eagles may as well start playing youth. I am writing off their season as done, and their kicking coach better get ready for a whole lot of overtime.
