Is Benji Marshall a perfect fit for the Dragons?

By Walter Penninger / Roar Guru

With only one game under his belt Benji Marshall has already proven to be a perfect fit for the Dragons.

Benji, with his dropped ball, stripped ball and misguided passes, looked like he had been playing with the Dragons all year in his debut against the Parramatta Eels.

His teammates fully supported these efforts with an appalling completion rate and bad defence.

The Dragons’ defence was uncharacteristically good for the first 20 minutes, before eventually letting in a try outside an increasingly frustrated Brett Morris, who nevertheless seems destined for certain State of Origin selection for NSW.

So, with a bye next weekend and Brett Morris, Trent Merrin and possibly Josh Dugan off to play Origin, what have we learnt out of Benji’s first game for the Dragons?

Firstly, coach Steve Price threw Benji in the deep end with only three training sessions with the team and made him play the full game at halfback.

Despite this, Benji showed enough glimpses to suggest that, as he settles in with the bye and the next match against Souths after Origin 1, he will deliver the goods for the Dragons with a few more games under his belt.

It was Benji’s good pass that sent Mike Cooper over in the first half, only to be incorrectly called forward by the referee, who then disallowed another Dragons try after failing to play advantage when the Eels knocked-on.

It was these two refereeing errors that resulted in the Dragons losing all composure and putting on a game of panic football, which resulted in their complete demise in the second half.

The referees for this game thoroughly deserve to join the Dragons with a bye or demotion to NSW Cup this weekend, but strangely coach Steve Price has not commented on the officials’ performance.

Steve Price has also been silent on not naming one of the best Dragons forwards all year, Mike Cooper, in the squad for this game and then recalling him at the last moment. Cooper clearly needs to play in the starting side for the Dragons.

On the positive side Price did finally name NSW Cup back Peter Mata’Utia in place of Jason Nightingale on the wing. Mata’Utia played well on debut and hopefully this will be the end of Price’s experiment of naming slow second rowers in the backline.

So where do the Dragons go from here?

Well they have been going backwards quickly, with only one win from their last seven games, and have yet to record a win against the top teams. So the two points from the bye will be welcome.

They are facing up against Souths in two weeks’ time after Origin 1, so Brett Morris and Josh Dugan will be available.

If Nightingale is unavailable for the Souths match, then Charly Runciman should be promoted to centre with Mata’Utai on the wing.

Benji and Gareth Widdop are the halves, the Dragons will then have a strong defensive and attacking backline which will only improve with game experience. But what of the forwards?

Mike Cooper clearly needs to be in the run on side as either second row or prop and Tyson Frizell is wasted at prop and should play second row. Ben Creach is playing well in the second row but needs to get his forwards motivated.

Mitch Rein playing the full game at hooker is starting to look increasingly frustrated and tiring at the end of the game, which then reduces the Dragons’ defence and attacking options. Trent Merrin is not getting enough support for offloads in attack.

Some of the NSW Cup Cutters forwards deserve a chance and some of the existing forwards need the experience of learning how to tackle in the NSW Cup.

One other problem is that Steve Price has not been managing the interchange bench properly. While at this stage he has got rid of the ulitity back from the bench in favour of an extra forward, Price’s timing of interchanges is poor.

So will the Dragons beat Souths?

Well, probably not, but they can only improve on their last two games, and after Souths they play three of the lesser teams, by which time we should see what Benji can do.

Steve Price described his team’s performance against the Bulldogs as “soft” and then made few changes and now says he cannot put his “finger on the problem” with the performance against the Eels. The axe is either about to fall on the Dragons coach, or at least it is being sharpened.

I agree I think Beale is struggling in defence still and does not do much with the ball in his hands. Runciman is clearly a better choice to be the centre partner for Morris.

You are correct. The forwards were woeful, in fact the whole team were woeful. They played a pretty hot team though. I think you are foxing and wanting to play Benji in the halves next time you play them. I would want Benji playing in the 7, in every team I played. He once was a great player now he is a dudder.

I had said three weeks with one of them being a bye before Price should be saying goodbye. So this makes Cronulla the final straw. He will need a big showing if he really wants to keep his position.

Price should go now. Have been hearing the 3 candidates are Laurei Daley, Niel Henry and Wayne Bennett.

If you watch the replay of that, and other points in the game, Gerard Beale reads the attack very badly and drifts out before coming back in too late, thus commiting Morris to defend 2 on one, which was never possible. I got the feeling the Morris is getting quite frustrated at this and at not getting much attacking ball.

That;s only true if the coach is a good coach to start with. From the patterns of attack to the style of the defence and the lack of any game plan or ability to adapt to each team, and finishing with motivating his team, Steve price seems to have no real talent to deal with any of these things. His selection of picking back rowers as props has proved to be a failure. But mostly Steve Price has been in charge since Wayne Bennett announce he was leaving. The team went backwards, the standard dropped from the best defensive to the worst, from a hard tough team back to a soft underbelly as was the pre-Bennett period. enough is enough.

Good idea with Benji playing NSW Cup. I am betting that Round 13 will not be lucky for Price, a loss against Cronulla who are improving could be the final straw.

Benji's mind is there just a few problems with timing and combinations.

They’re back: The Price is Wrong and Oust Doust signs were seen outside St George Leagues Club yesterday. That will happen when you lose six of your last seven games after declaring things will be different this season. Steve Price looked sadly bereft of ideas after the Dragons’ loss to the Eels, which rarely spells anything but doom. Ricky Stuart just looked angry after his Raiders lost their third game in a row. So very angry. The Dragons fans should just put up a sign "coach wanted, no experience needed, apply with"

Thanks Muzz but I hope the SMH is wrong about keeping Price til the year end, which gives the Dragons fans no hope.

You are right about the first try scored outside Morris. Maybe they were told to deliberately compress in defence to try to plug gaps in the centre.

Benji is gone. Lost speed and reflex's. If he is paid what is said he has been paid what desire could he have to put his body on the line? One of the best of the modern era but past it I'm afraid.

Price needs to go, no questions about it. Benji needs to play NSW Cup this week to get some valuable game time while the rest take the bye

Price's time in the NRL is surely up. He should resign and save himself the embarrassment of being sacked as coach.

What are you smoking? With Widdop and Marshall at half and five eight the Dragons will have a strong defensive and attacking backline????? Really. Benji's defence was always suspect at the Tigers and it hasn't improved. He might have had some opportunity to learn to put his body on the line in touch footy...sorry Rugby Union, but he was on he bench. Even when Benji was at his attacking best, he was a disaster at 7, and Sheens hid him on the wing. There is something seriously wrong with the team attitude. Just watch the first try by Parramatta, flat ball from Peats to the wing, but the worrying thing was that the St George players walked back and watched the winger improve his position to almost under the posts. The try started from only 10m out. No one at all has an excuse not to chase and keep the conversion wide. That a disgrace and smacks of disinterest. There is something going on behind the scenes here. St George should pray every night and be thankful we have Newcastle and Canberra in the competition. They may just dodge the wooden spoon.

Benji will eventually shine, i hope. But he needs more time. He and Widdop need to work on their combination and make sure they begin passing to each other close to the line.

The coach is only as good as the support(belief)he gets from his players..these recent blow outs suggest he's losing them..on paper, the Eels forwards aren't better than the Dragons..ditto the backs..36 points of attitude to 6..I've run out of excuses for him..
