With poor old Newcastle Knights finding themselves in a financial mess, Brisbane’s original super coach could soon find himself back on the open market.

The no-nonsense Wayne Bennett is said to recently have strained relations with beleaguered Knights owner Nathan Tinkler, who Bennett is contracted to directly.

Is there a case for Brisbane to make a run at him if the opportunity arises?

The Broncos used to be a club that players wanted to play for, with depth that resulted from players taking contracts under their market value to remain at the club.

That’s all changed in recent seasons. Current coach Anthony Griffin has watched a string of players exit the club in recent years. Corey Norman, Gerard Beale and Peter Wallace left the club at the end of 2013, with Josh Hoffman wanting out last year after the signing of Ben Barba.

Hoffman has been developing as a five-eight this year, but now it seems he’ll have to move again with Anthony Milford inbound in 2015.

Is Hoffman the perfect replacement for Justin Hodges outside Milford and on-fire halfback Ben Hunt when Hodgo hangs up the boots?

Probably. But will he last at the Broncos that long?

Now tensions are being strained with Ben Hannant after the in-form prop was dropped for reasons that only Griffin seems to know about.

With Brisbane’s winning record sitting under 55 per cent on Griffin’s watch, Broncos fans must be salivating at the thought that their coaching god could be looking for a new club.

Barba and Milford are attracted to Brisbane because of family issues, not the culture that the Broncos used to have.

Would Bennett return the culture that made this club finals certainties every year?

Broncos fans would be going mental if the brains trust at Red Hill didn’t make a red hot attempt at bringing Bennett back home should the opportunity arise.
