Australia’s Marinko Matosevic has a battle on his hands against crafty Belgian Jeremy Chardy at Wimbledon this evening, in his bid to make it further than he’s ever been in a Grand Slam.

Matosevic was exceptionally impressive in his win over Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the first round of Wimbledon, his first single victory on the hallowed turf in four appearances.

Four fairly convincing sets over such a strong player is a good sign for the 28-year-old Victorian, who claimed his first Grand Slam victory just over a month ago at the French Open.

In that tournament he met Andy Murray in the second round. Here, he meets Chardy, and he has a good chance.

Matosevic is ranked number 58 in the world, just 16 places behind the 42nd-ranked Chardy.

Matosevic is maturing as a player and a ball-striker, and has the weapons to hurt a player like Chardy on both sides.

But Chardy is a quality player who has performed better at more big tournaments than Matosevic, and has reached the third round of Wimbledon on three occasions. He doesn’t have as big a game as Matosevic, but you could say he has an edge in temperament, with the Australian known for his feisty play.

His aggression should continue here against noted baseliner Chardy. Against Verdasco, who has a more powerful forehand than Marinko’s opponent tonight, Matosevic approached the net a whopping 52 times, winning around 65 per cent of these points. Expect something similar tonight, particularly if Matosevic gets his first serve in a reasonable percentage of the time.

Realistically, this is as good a chance Matosevic will get to progress to the third round of a Grand Slam. He will be rueing it if he doesn’t capitalise tonight.
