Rodriguez goals help Colombia to win

By Tom Williams / Roar Rookie

James Rodriguez has scored an exquisite goal as Colombia beat Uruguay 2-0 to set up a World Cup quarter-final against hosts Brazil.

Pre-match build-up had been dominated by Luis Suarez’s four-month ban for biting, but by the final whistle in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium, there was only one name on everyone’s lips.

After scoring in every group game, Rodriguez broke the deadlock shortly before the half hour with a breathtaking strike, chesting the ball down and volleying home from 25 metres.

The 22-year-old Monaco playmaker added a second early in the second half, sending him to the top of the scorers chart at the tournament with five goals and confirming his status as a World Cup hot property.

Rodriguez’s goals took Colombia into the quarter-finals for the first time, meaning the northern Brazilian city of Fortaleza will turn completely yellow when Jose Pekerman’s side play the hosts on July 4.

On the prospect of facing Brazil, Rodriguez said: “They’re a tough team, they have great players, and they also have their history.

“But we have to go out onto the pitch looking to win, as we’ve always done.”

Uruguay’s fans sported Suarez masks and brandished banners in support of their wayward star, who flew home to Montevideo on Friday, while his shirt was hung up in the Uruguay changing room.

But they endured a night of disappointment on their return to the Maracana, scene of the country’s 2-1 win over Brazil in the deciding game of the 1950 World Cup.

“The (first) goal was 100 per cent the work of the player who scored it. It was one of the greatest goals of this World Cup,” said Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez.

“We have to accept defeat, congratulate Colombia, and wish them well, as a South American team, in the rest of the tournament.”

Diego Forlan replaced Suarez for Uruguay, while Pekerman sprang a surprise by selecting two centre-forwards in Jackson Martinez and Teofilo Gutierrez.

Colombians Juan Cuadrado and Juan Zuniga set the tone with purposeful early runs at the Uruguay defence, with one of the latter’s raids culminating in a low shot that Fernando Muslera gathered at the second attempt.

Uruguay were content to cede possession to their opponents, sitting deep on the edge of their own box, but their defences were breached in the 28th minute by a goal of jaw-dropping splendour.

After Abel Aguilar saw a chipped pass cleared back to him, he headed the ball up to Rodriguez, who was standing just outside the penalty area.

The Colombia number 10 controlled the ball on his chest, turned, and unleashed a magnificent dipping volley that crashed in off the crossbar.

Rodriguez has now scored in each of his last six international games.

Uruguay set about trying to wipe out the deficit, but Edinson Cavani’s free-kick narrowly cleared the bar and Alvaro Gonzalez was foiled by a full-length parry from Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina.

Colombia doubled their lead five minutes into the second half with a fine team goal.

Pablo Armero’s deep left-wing cross was headed down by Cuadrado and Rodriguez swept home his second of the night from close range.

Brazil have been unconvincing this WC. The 2002 side would thump this current team 5 - 0. I hope colombia send them packing

Always felt that Portugal's coefficient is a little inflated due to Benfica and Porto being so strong in Europa but fairly weak in UCL. Yeah I was backing Chile as well. But really after the first 70mins they didn't look like winning aside from that amazing strike by Pinilla in the 120th minute. I think for the good of the WC, a win to Brazil was essential.

France is now the 6th league in Europe in terms of uefa coefficients AZ (behind Spain, Italy, EPL, Germ and even Portugal). My comment was a bit ;) though. Same here, hope they beat Brasil at next round. The pressure during the penalty shoot out this morning was just incredible. Even in the middle of the night thousands of km away in front of a tv I could feel the weight of a nation on the shoulders of the players, incredible feeling! I was barracking for Chile all match long but have to say I had mixed emotions during the penalties session as it would literally have put a whole country on their knees. Scolari and his players dodged a huge bazooka rocket this morning.

Yes as the commentator said this morning "Monaco can name their price". And agree about Brasil... they were not the most convincing and Chile will have been devastated not to have been the ones to knock them out, they had their chances. The one thing is that they did begin to threaten as time went on - it was Jo by that point, but he wasn't doing much either.

Would hardly call Ligue 1 a minor league, particularly considering the talent PSG and Monaco possess as well as the talent that has come out of there in the past few years. But yeah, I was thinking the same thing re Rodriguez. There's no way they'll let him go for anything less than an astronomical figure that I highly doubt any club in Europe would be capable of paying at the moment. Will be interesting to see how Monaco go in Europe this season. Brazil will really need to step up if they are to have any chance vs Colombia. I don't think they can afford to start Fred, he is a liability. But then again, they have little or no back up. Colombia to win 3-1 next weekend.

So happy that the best player (so far) of this WC plays in a minor euro league. Monaco bought him for 40M E, he is only 22yo, still have 4 years left on his contract, they don't need money...meaning he is probably worth close to 100M E right now. Same with Ochoa the Mexican gk: spent the last couple of years at Ajaccio where he played some outstanding matches despite (or thanks to) a weak defence in front of him. That's what clever spending can do for you. Colombia v Brasil could be the match of the WC.

I am from Colombia, I am very proud of my team because this is the first time Colombia is doing very well in the World Cup. Colombia will be more respected from other countries from now on.

Colombia look very good, Brazil will not be looking forward to playing them. James is a great talent, cracking goal. Expect the big European Clubs to be circling.
