Dragons get sweet revenge on Storm

By Ben Horne / Roar Guru

St George Illawarra produced their sharpest performance of the season under new coach Paul McGregor to down Melbourne 24-12 on Monday night.

Benji Marshall continued to silence his critics as his partnership with Gareth Widdop spearheaded an impressive five-try NRL haul in front of 10,117 fans at WIN Stadium.

NSW centre Josh Dugan threw a brilliant one-handed offload – after ripping his fingernail clean off the finger – to produce the match-sealing try and the Dragons’ gritty defence kept the Storm attack to just two tries.

The upshot was a significant boost to McGregor’s claims to cement himself as the Dragons’ long-term coach.

Speculation is mounting that the Dragons will make a big play to bring Wayne Bennett back to the club where he broke the joint venture’s premiership drought in 2010.

But McGregor now has three wins from five starts since taking over from sacked coach Steve Price, and as the Dragons edge to within one win of the top eight, he is strengthening his case for a permanent contract.

Billy Slater took another step towards Ken Irvine’s coveted all-time try-scoring record of 212, by leapfrogging Andrew Ettingshausen into outright third on the list with his 166th career try.

Irvine’s mark long appeared to be one rugby league record that may never be broken, but if Slater can play for another three seasons and maintain his current strike-rate, he remains a chance to make history.

Slater’s first half try got the Storm within four, after Marshall and Widdop inspired the Dragons to their fastest start of 2014.

A crisp Marshall long ball put Dugan over after six minutes – showing Melbourne what they missed out on – with the Storm one of the suitors who missed out on his signature mid-season.

Then it was Widdop’s turn to rub it in, chipping and regathering with a lucky bounce to score against his former teammates.

A major turning point in the match came shortly before halftime when referee Ashley Klein penalised Storm prop Bryan Norrie for an obstruction, even though he was immediately tackled with no try scored.

Storm captain Cameron Smith argued at length that the call was inconsistent with how the rule has been interpreted all season, but it didn’t help Melbourne who find themselves in unfamiliar territory at this stage of the season in ninth place.

Dugan hyperextended his ankle before the break but battled on, producing a key play to beat his man on the outside before flicking a miracle flick pass for Jason Nightingale to cross.

Dugan appears as though he will be fine for NSW selection, while fellow Origin candidates Trent Merrin (Blues) and Will Chambers (Queensland) returned from injury to turn in impressive performances.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said his team “put two points on a silver platter” for St George Illawarra with a lacklustre start to the second half.

However he branded the obstruction call against Norrie before halftime as “ridiculous.”

“I’m highly confused. How many times have you seen that in a game? I think Cameron made the point, I don’t think he obstructed anyone because he didn’t score,” he said.

“Next time that happens I want to see a penalty … but it won’t. It’ll probably be a one off.”

St George Illawarra skipper Ben Creagh said McGregor’s coaching style has brought the best out in his team.

“What Mary expects from us at training and what he expects from the game, he’s pretty clear on that and the guys have bought into it,” Creagh said.

Ken, Free flowing in comparison with a lot of games this season. I agree Storm 'rucking lay upons' are nauseating, which added further spice to the win. StG - I are building nicely which can only be good for RL. Mary clearly outpointed Bellyache.

The refs did manage to avoid many big controversies in that game but I wouldn't have said it was free-flowing. Melbourne were allowed huge latitude to lay all over the ruck, I thought we'd gone back 5-6 years. My big fear in the second half was that Saints would start to follow their lead, not do it as smoothly and get penalised out of the game. They DID start to copy, but didn't overdo it luckily.

No but you want to give him every chance to set up next year. I agree, McGregor has a gravitas around him that has worked well so far in getting the players gelled into a cohesive unit. Lock him in for next year, put some certainty in the joint and see what he can do with the remainder of this year and a full pre-season next time around. What are the better options really? Bennett and Sheens seem to be the big names, with a handful of others floating around. Bennett pulled the Dragons up with a premiership but he also kinda decimated us when he left. He isn't exactly setting the world on fire at Newcastle, are his better days behind him? Sheens hasn't had a regular NRL gig for a while now and managed 1 come from nowhere premiership in the last 20 seasons, he's no golden bullet either. I'd rather see what McGregor can do given some time.

When The Saints are on song and playing at WIN they are a formidable force. No Coop and the extra K's to Wollongong on a cold night with a westerly blowing are factors advantaging the home team. The game proved one of the seasons best to date in standard of play, viewing and financially . Glad to see ST-I got revenge Congratulations to the refs for the free flow and only 6 penalties. These are the type of H& A encounters which showcase the GGOA.

There are comments saying that Bennett is being approached. If that is the case they should reconsider as McGregor has proven he can handle this role and will continue to grow for the future.

Why jump the gun? Let it play out for at least another 5-6 weeks before signing him on a 1 yr contract. It's not like other clubs are sitting their waiting to sign him.

Well done Dragons! One step at a time to get into the top eight. Win the next game and a bye the week after will give a good indication whether they can make it or not. Paul McGregor should get the coach job as he is the coach for the future, showing a lot of promise. The combination of Widdop and Marshall is starting to pay dividends and could end up being one of the best halve combinations in the competition.
