Honey Badger puts family ahead of World Cup

By David Barbeler / Roar Guru

Wallabies cult hero Nick Cummins says he’s had to put aside his dream of playing in next year’s Rugby World Cup to provide immediate certainty for his sick family.

Nicknamed the “Honey Badger”, Cummins has been reluctantly granted a release from his ARU and Super Rugby contract to play in Japan due to “unique and extreme personal circumstances”.

The 26-year-old 15-Test winger has been in career-best form with the Force in 2014 and started in all three Tests in the clean sweep victory over France last month.

But at the end of the Super Rugby season Cummins will join the Coca Cola West Red Sparks on a lucrative deal in Japan’s Top League, which runs from the end of August until the beginning of February.

That means Cummins will join former captain Ben Mowen and Kane Douglas as Wallabies that have ruled themselves out of next year’s Rugby World Cup, kicking off in mid-September.

“My family is currently enduring some extremely difficult times in terms of their health and wellbeing,” Cummins wrote in a statement on Friday.

“My time in Japan will hopefully provide me with the opportunity to give back to and provide some certainty for my family.

“It was a difficult decision to make in the context of a Rugby World Cup next year, but the health and wellbeing of my family is paramount.

“I now must put my own interests in the world cup aside.”

The wild-haired, knockabout winger’s Test-winning percentage (77 per cent) is up there with the most successful Wallabies of all time.

His success rate increases to 100 per cent when he “bags some meat”.

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie said Cummins would be sorely missed.

“It is very disappointing to lose a player of Nick’s calibre, but we appreciate this is a decision based on what is best for him and his family,” he said.

Fortunately for the Wallabies, dynamic winger Henry Speight becomes eligible to play for Australia from September 11, while his Brumbies teammate Joe Tomane will soon return to the field from a fractured cheekbone.

While Cummins will be out of Test action for the foreseeable future, the Force are working out ways for the Japanese club to loan the cult hero back to them – a la George Smith with the Brumbies in 2013 – for next year’s Super Rugby season, which will begin in mid-February.

“It’s hoped the conditions of Cummins’ release will allow him to play with the Force again next year,” a statement from the Force said on Friday.

Cummins’ decision to accept the Japanese offer wasn’t necessarily a surprise to the Force, but the timing of the unexpected West Red Sparks’ announcement certainly was.

“It’s hugely disappointing but, ultimately, it’s more disappointing for Nick with the situation he’s facing,” Force CEO Mark Sinderberry said.

As far as I understand it only the marquee signings get the mega contracts, the rest of the players are hired as part of the company and only get their companies standard wage.

Nothing but respect for the Badge, but what are the Japs going to make of post-match interviews like his last one? "I’ve come across. I’ve gone Wykesy yeah, give it, give it. He goes no no no, he pushed me, he pushed me out. I’m thinkin’, Wykesy’s going to throw a long ball here, how’s this gonna go? Fair dinkum, flicks it across, bloody caught it, off like a bride’s nightie, meaty, corner, celebrations.com. It’s bloody outstanding." Too bloody right!

Except Tevez argued Milan was closer to Buenos Aires, which anyone looking at a map can see it isn't. The Raiders went out of their way to accommodate Milford, having already lost 3 young superstars over recent history. Of course they were reluctant to let him go. The ARU can and will replace any player that needs to go. It's always sad but the game moves on.

Ben Mowen wasn't on contract next year, but he exaggarted his personal circumstances to say why he left for French rugby $$. He wasn't contracted next year, but i'm sure if Ben Mowen was offered tha same as French rugby all that experience a new culture and less travel bs $$, would not be sprouted. What would you prefer Wallaby captain or playing in the south of france other side of world if on same cash, staying at home wins hands down.

daws- You should note that I wrote 'rules' not 'laws'. I agree that many of the unfair and unjust laws since 1788 have been flouted and this has led to a change in the law. The point remains though Aussies generally love their rules and adhere to them more strictly than other countries. In any event I doubt that Pulver will be willing to change the ARU's stance on this.

"... where rules, however silly, have been strictly enforced". I think you might want to rephrase that, there have been plenty of 'silly" rules over time that have caused unnecessary suffering.

Cummins has done the right thing as family comes first but I also support the ARU maintaining the eligibility rules and consequently feel that there should not be exceptions made for anybody. Whilst I have no doubt that cummins' situation is true if an exception is made some other players may exaggerate their personal circumstances to play overseas and then still try and be eligible for the wallabies. Since 1788 and the early days of the penal colonies, Australia has always been a country where rules, however silly, have been strictly enforced. This should be maintained. The picking of George smith in the lions tour was a disgrace which I am pleased to say backfired spectacularly.

No employers that hard hearted, I don't know about that. Milford wanted a release the Raider''s didn't buckle and his dad was unwell, they made a comprimise and they helped moved his family to Canberra. The dogs got a compensation package to settle the SBW stuff. The ARU I don't reckon would buckle for Folau unless a big compo pay out was given. Australian rugby is in tatters and withering at the grapevine dead last in the code war,it's struggling big time and Australian rugby is in debt. The IRB thought the SH unions would be cool with the World cup schedule, they were not. The ARU and NZRU now get a big compensation package each world cup for loss of earnings in World cup seasons. JON and Steve Tew threatened to boycott the World Cup if no compo package was given. I don't reckon Cricket Australia would release Warney in his prime to have a lucrative county stint if it meant not playing test cricket. If the player is highly valued im not so sure, then the word compassionate grounds gets blurred and fought for. Ruben Wiki had an almighty fight to reneg on his Raiders deal and not go to the warriors a contract he'd signed, all sorts of excuses were flown to reneg on that Warriors deal in the 90's. Man City didn't release Carlos Tevez, despite his endless pleas about homesickness missing family and all sorts of problems. They later transfered him but 3 years later to Italy and not back to Argentina.

Johnno, an employer almost never stands in someones way. Folau would be released reluctantly but of course they would let him go. Any employee would be wished well. No employers are that hard hearted. Don't you remember SBW? Even he was let go eventually once they found out he had skipped the country haha Things were sorted and smoothed over and the club or union has no interest in blocking someone from leaving, even if it is for more money.

Im gonna have a look at this from a few angles, the Honey Badger,Alola Milford, and Folau. Folau wanted to move to Broncos to be close to family who some aren't well. He then got a big package deal offer by GWS $$ and then moved the family back down to Sydney, Milford was unhappy in Canberra was not granted a release but the club moved his folkes down to Canberra, only now there all going back to brissy. I reckon this was kind fo the ARU to release the honey badger, and compassionate grounds should be done on case by case basis not precedent, however it's always a dark cloud that causes debate. And I wonder what the ARU would of done if Quade Cooper or Folau asked for to be released on compassionate grounds in similar circumstancees, would the ARU let Folau go, or would the NZRU let Dan Carter or Mccaw go on compassionate grounds, for all 3 to only be swooped on by Japan clubs, I don't think so. Compassionate grounds always has been a grey area, and often is based on the players market value. The dogs didn't want to release SBW on compassionate grounds all those years ago, were filthy and got a compo pay-out.

Nicely put Rabbitz. It is both a bit of a feel good story about a young man with a ton of heart and sad on so many levels. I'm sure for all our bickering and cheap comments this will remain a special moment of a superb young player doing something of great honour. Kia kaha Nick. May the gods always be with you.
