[VIDEO] Western Force vs Queensland Reds: Super Rugby highlights, scores

By The Roar / Editor

The Western Force host the Queensland Reds at nib Stadium in Perth on Saturday night. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:40pm (AEST).

The last time these sides me was in Round 8 at Suncorp Stadium, a match that match saw the Force run out a thrilling 32-29 victory.

With their finals chances well and truly gone, the Reds enter this match with nothing to play for but pride. They enter the match off a strong 20-36 victory against the Rebels in Melbourne last round and will be looking to continue their face-saving run tonight.

The Force enter this match with the news of Nick Cummins’ impending departure fresh in their minds. The beloved Wallaby was released form his ARU and Super Rugby contract during the week to allow him to make a move to the Japanese Top League on a lucrative deal with the Coca Cola West Red Sparks.

Nick Cummins has become well known for his unique post-match humour and thrilling play, making him a fan favourite not just in Perth but throughout the entire rugby community. The unfortunate family issues that have driven his decision will be a big driver for the Force today.

This match is also a must win for the Force. Despite a big home loss last round at the hand of the Blues, their hopes of playing finals this season are still well and truly alive. However, they cannot afford to drop their last home match before they travel to face the Brumbies for their final regular season match next week.

The Brumbies have the bye this round, so a win to the Force tonight could see them enter that match even on points, making it a crucial clash to decide who plays finals this season.

The significance of a win today in the context of their season would usually by itself be enough to power a home team over the line. Adding to this the fact that a favourite has announced his departure from the club, means the Force will be fired up and very determined to get the result they need today.

Join The Roar for live scores from 7:40pm (AEST). If you are following the match, be sure to share your thoughts in the comments bellow.

I think it was the pop pass? Looked forward from the right rear cam angle. But cant tell for sure. TMO would have been good. Having said that, Reds D had nothing at that point.

Some 'notes' from watching the replay 0' Good rucking Force 1' Good scrum force. Reds win it 2' Reds initial defence flat, but then rushed out up to snuffs Reds out. Inspired by Shatz on Hodgson 3' Reds Box / chase pretty good. Dropped cold by Force 4' Scrum messy. Nice kick Lucas to Force 22 5' Nice defence lineout Reds. Maul called quickly, and Force loses the ball. Good reds scrum. Force illegally slows the ball on first phase. Should have been penalised. Penalised anyway after couple of tackles 7' Harris nails from the front. Force looks to disrupt and slow anyway possible esp in their redzone 8' Nice drives from Force pack. Finally their lock does what their 9 or 10 should have done many rucks earlier. Give it to the wing to score. Started from the Cruden-eqsue kick to the sideline which trapped the English. The Canes didnt fall for that trick. But the Reds / Davies did. 11' Silly restart, out on the full to the sideline by Lucas 12' scrum. Free kick Force for unstable Red midline 13' Wykes runs through Shatz. Bunch of penalty advantages. Lucas offside 16' Reds zero ball since the restart by Force before the first try Reds loses a lineout (thrown to Shatz) 17' Good rush defence from Reds forces a dropped ball. Good TH scrum Force 18' Reds finally with the ball, but slow recycle 19' Ball lost by Kerevi passing to his 7. And thats possession lost, and a flat d-line. Fast boys on fat boys for the break. And a try 50m later. Costly set of mistakes by the Reds 20' Finally a restart that works. Shatz steals the ball, runs out by himself, and loses it 21' Nice steal by Reds on the lineout but lost it. 22' Reds loses their own lineout. Nice kick close to the sideline causing Harris to make a mistake 25' Even scrum. Force still has most of the ball. Reds defence not rushing up. Now they have stopped Force Reds finally get the turnover. Kerevi beats a 100. But isolated and loses it 26' Force Kick to the sideline. Turner does a Harris 27' Force scrum ok. Reds midfield defence looks confused. 28' Force offence redzone continues to keep in the middle. Snuffs a try outwide MMM on Lucas, yep thats a Red Card. 30' Good scrum Reds. Harris push pass bad and gives the ball and possession to Force Reds either losing the ball. When they break the adline, which seems easy the runner is isolated. Reminds me of WBs in their first few games 31' Reds 9 box too long. Force return kicks shows how it should be done. 32' Harris kick terrible. But Force return equals it 33' Reds lineout win on Force throw, runs and loses it again. This time into touch 34' Reds lineout win against the Force Nice switch play from Taps to Kerevi opened up the Force, but no support runners. Again isolated 36' Penalty, lineout maul. Nice pass from Reds 9 to Kerevi, with inside step for the try. 39' Poor restart collection by Reds stolen by Badger, passes to Kerevi. They earn a penalty which Harris runs. Gains a few metres up the middle. Slipper drops the pill 40' Messy scrum. MMM and Lucas has a tiff. This time Lucas able to stand up to him Force intensity falling off 41' Nice lineout win Reds, to Kerevi who loses the ball. At least 3rd time he loses it this game 42' Force finds a huge gap in the 10 channel. But loses it in a Reds tackle 43' Scott Gale is in for Frisby. Who's Scott Gale? Force scrum. cowen over Slipper. Good lesson on why you dont move your props around. 44' Bad miss Hayward. No reward for a good Force scrum. Force kick post restart too deep 45' Kerevi breaks the line again, no support. Almost lost it. lost momentum 46' Lineout win by Force, terrible forward pass by Force 13 on Davies wing 47' Predicable pass by Lucas to his inspired 7. Tackled, turnover, because the other Reds tied up in the Kerevi tackle 48' Force runs it up, get a penalty. Hayward missed. competing with the Rebels kicker for the worst kick of the season 50' Penalty on soft high tackle. Hayward kick third time lucky 54' Badger rushing up. Lucas finding miles of space behind him 55' Scrum Reds feed. Tough call by ref, should have been penalty against the Force 56' Good Reds scrum, opens Force midfield. Nice break from Kerevi. Browning loses the ball on the right side. Charles knees Saia on the feck (face/neck) who's also on his back 57' Reds keeping possession. And a lineout maul win try. Reds bread butter 59' Force restart out on the full 60' Kerevi slices through again, and loses the ball 61' Another bad kick out on the full Prior 62' Reds nice lineout win, and Tapuai drops it cold. Frisby helped pass helped it a bit. Turn point? 63' Force scrum. Two resets. Force survives 64' Turner kicks instead of running, and out on the full 65' Force loses the ball. Nice break from Tapaui to Harris. Who then passes to nobody. 67' Reds rush defence post lineout, kills Force ball, forces a penalty. Good job Slipper 68' Poor run/BD from Reds pack post restart. Wykes over the ball for easy 3 points 71' Nice lineout win Reds. But set piece distribution tooo slow. Frisby isolated Reds lose 30+m 73' Reds kick it to touch. Post lineout, Reds defence in disarray, try Force 70m downfield 74' Schatz does a Badger and wins the restart in the middle. Slipper drops it in tackle 10m out 75' Davies rushes up and Force runs past him 76' Ref miss the Force foot in touch. That ball was straight.. to the force lineout 78' Reds lineout messy and lose the ball. Wins the scrum. 80' Nice lineout good. Goes to Lucas then does a Harris and passes to the invisible winger. to touch

Just watched the game. Force v lucky to win the game, on account of having 15 men on the team. MMM should have been red carded. Nonetheless: Reds: - The pack delivered to their capability, which needs an upgrade. - Back 3 the main reason for loss of possession and the loss. Others contributed - Kerevi lost quite a bit of the pill, on the end of the metres made. Pushed passes or isolated. Once led to 2nd Force try - Lost the game after the bench came on Force: - Needs sons of Eber and Mathew to win the next game. Lost try opportunities in Reds redzone - Hodgson's opening run for the 3rd try made the difference. Saw the Reds d-line in tatters, and put the Reds to the sword - Scrum dropped after Cowan left the field 1st try (Force): came from Cruden-esque sideline restart. Davies should have watched the Canes Chiefs game. 2nd try (Force): One of Kerevi's post-linebreak lost balls turned around into the Force 2nd try. Helped by fast-guy on fat-guy run and missed tackle by Browning 3rd ty (Reds): Trucked up via Taps/Kerevi switch play. Who loses the ball but Reds get it back. Nice pass from Frisby to Kerevi who again steps inwards, whilst the Force defence jockeying out 4th try (Reds): Badger up in defence. Lucas kicks / exposes his corner again. Reds chase get turnover then penalty. Then lineout maul try. Anae 5th try (Force): missed what started the raid post lineout deep in their half. But Hodgson saw riddled Reds defence and trucked it up. Quick recycle and Charles an easy try

100% re the pack positions. Its make or break for the Reds. I think so too that JOC can cover 12 as long as he passes the ball. But saw in the news hes positioned to play further out. Twins may not be the team after the overhaul. Taps has been inconsistent past few years, heard its related to training, and breaking his collarbone couple years ago. But he's better this year. 12 is pretty important for the Reds future I think cos most opponents focus on harassing the 9/10. A top shelf 12 will add a new threat and limit the over reliance on WG QC

Saders and Sharks can still over take the Tahs IF the Tahs dont beat the highlanders. We just saw the Cheetahs beat the Sharks. Dont be surprised if the Reds at home beat the Tahs next week.

Several "worse game(s) all year" are applicable to the WF (and possibly their opponents in this match). They (WF) might have won this game, but their last several losses indicate a team definitely 'off the boil'. Cannot see them beating the Brumbies next week. The Force look 2nd rate against NZ and SA teams. This has been a curious season for them....a record win streak followed by Crusader/Blues thrashings. Hard to explain this predicament!

As a Tahs fan - the massive news overnight was the Sharks LOSING to the Cheetahs. This means the Tahs only need to win one of their last two games to top the log. The Sharks started a 2nd string team, so not really sure what they expected. So if the Tahs win this arvo - they have top spot sewn up with a round to go. To me that means rest guys with niggles and give extra game time to guys that need it - like Paddy Ryan, Skelton, McKibbin, Naiqararovo etc. Massive game this arvo!

Both Taps and Ant can do the job at 12. As can JOC. The problem is at tighthead, 6 and 8. backup second rows ... assume Will and Quade stay.

the canes played the chiefs the blues the crusaders, the force played the reds and would be the least deserving side to get through if they made it because they got to play the rebels and reds twice

"The referee for the match, Angus Gardner, reviewed the incident with the television match official and issued a yellow card. Upon further review of the match footage, the Citing Commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play " Well done Gardener. TMO useless, Touchie useless, on field ref useless. EPH, I said the officiating was poor. Reds may have been off-side, maybe not, but I can't recall a major decision favouring the Reds but tell me if I'm wrong. For example foot in touch, try awarded without visual confirmation, no advantage in try-scoring position, and called back for knock-on when professional foul was a more probable penalty.

Hopefully a lot of roarers can move on from last weeks love fest of Lucas and Fisby. A game of little front foot ball and they get a big fail. Daley must be laughing that he is on a 3 year deal as no-one would want him and the back row was so in efficient and passive it makes JOC signing as important as wiping you bottom.

2014-07-05T15:44:43+00:00

I was just looking at the table. Apart from the Cheetahs we might have three teams end in the thirties

Good point Biltong "all Bulls should be able to scrum, plenty of beef",such a pity Stormers were late bloomer's,could give the Sharks a toughie next week

2014-07-05T15:30:04+00:00

Stormers all over the Bulls, Bulls just defending for their lives

2014-07-05T15:27:17+00:00

Watching the Stormers vs Bulls, I can't understand that the Bulls have not been able to find better props.

Given how much time the Reds spent offside I don't think you've got much to complain about

Depends on how level you believe the playing field to be. Based on the results this weekend, the Blues are now gone and have nothing left to play for. If they beat the Chiefs next week, the Chiefs are gone as well and it is possible both the Force and Brumbies could get through. But if the Chiefs were to win, NZ is almost guaranteed three teams in the finals. If they somehow find a bonus point too, there's a high probability one of the NZ teams will lock down 4th and the home final...
