Sydney flying high across all codes of football

By Daniel Nichols / Roar Guru

Wins to the Sydney Swans, NSW Waratahs and Penrith Panthers on the weekend mean that Sydney currently holds a clean sweep of top spot across the three major footballing codes.

The Swans delivered their 11th straight victory with a 79 to 51 victory over the West Coast Eagles, taking the club to outright first on the competition ladder.

The Waratahs have now taken out the Super Rugby minor premiership after their 44-16 win over the Highlanders. They currently sit seven points clear of both the Sharks and the Crusaders with one game remaining.

Over in the NRL, Sydney teams occupy the top five positions on the ladder, with the aforementioned Panthers topping the Sea Eagles and Bulldogs on points differential.

At the start of each respective season, the odds were long for each of the current table toppers to be where they are. The Panthers were tipped to scrape into the bottom half of the eight, while the Swans were seen as potential top four candidates. As for the perennially underachieving Tahs, that was anybody’s guess.

Although there is a long way to go in all three competitions, the Harbour City looks like it will feature heavily comes finals time.

This after a second successful season for the Western Sydney Wanderers, who have played in two straight deciders. This included one campaign that ended with a minor premiership.

You could also cheekily add the success of the victorious NSW Origin Team, the majority of which is made up of Sydney-based players.

Even the struggling Cronulla Sutherland Sharks managed a win over their more highly fancied Brisbane opponents last Friday Night.

For the first time in history, a Sydney side may take out the title across the three major footballing codes, which would surely mean Sydney is once again the sporting capital of Australia.

Sorry Melbourne.

You'd probably best remember the Swans as the team that beat the Hawks two years ago on grand final day?

About Sydney sides did something. The Tahs and Blues have been owned by Qld over the past few years. The Swans? Who are they, go the Hawkers.

Wonder how paul kent and Roy Masters are going to handle the surge in media interest currently in the Waratahs and SWans. They have been more than happy yo bag both teams despite they are the highest crowds in Sydney this season.

11-9 is correct. Tahs lost to the Blues.

By my count it's 10-10 in Trans-Tasman matchups. Tahs 4-0, Reds 1-3, Brumbies 3-1, Rebs 0-2, Force 2-2. The point has always been a couple of weaker sides benefit the stronger sides, not that every team is worse. It's cyclical though.

Easy run? two of the Tahs 4 losses have been to Australian conference teams, whilst they're 3-1 for both the NZ and SA conferences. The NZ conference is clearly the toughest this year, but the trans-tasman tally is pretty even at about 11-9 to the Kiwi teams overall. If the Aussie conference was so bad then you'd expect it to be much more lopsided. We're also still a chance to see 3 Aussie teams in the finals btw.

I think enjoying the journey is just as important.. even if the tahs have an off day and lose the final, touchwood, i've enjoyed their rugby this year immensely

"they’re not the team they were back in that golden era up until 08"... Thanks scoop Main issue is just the increase competition that is spread evenly across each of the New Zealand teams, and the increased concentration of talent in the Tahs and Shorks who get an easy run in...

Not so convinced by the Saders this season... As England demonstrated their depth is pretty poor, and they were a tendency to just shuffle the ball from side to side without breaking the gain line. With Carter and Dagg back they'll be tougher, but they're not the team they were back in that golden era up until 08.

Swans and Tahs are going gangbusters at the moment aren't they? And whilst I prefer Union, in terms of their overall play, I feel like the Swans are the more complete outfit of the two. They have to be favourites to win.
