[VIDEO] Sydney Swans vs Carlton Blues: AFL highlights, scores, blog

By Brent Ford / Roar Guru

The Sydney Swans will be out to equal a club record 12 game winning streak when they return to the SCG to take on the Carlton Blues. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:40pm AEST.

It’s a record that has stood the test of time and is one that South Melbourne diehards absolutely cherish; today’s Sydney Swans however have the chance to equal the club record of winning 12 games straight with a win tonight, a record has been set three times – 1918, 1933-34 and 1935.

The turnaround from the Swans has been a significant one, they were the laughing stock of opposition supporters when they lost to the Giants in Round 1, but it was always going to take time for the team to gel.

Now on top of the ladder it will take an almighty challenge from a side to take down the Swans late into the season, and beyond. Could Carlton be the team to do it? History would say they aren’t the slightest chance in this one.

Despite despatching a lowly St Kilda last week with a dominant second half display, the Blues have been one of the disappointments of the 2014 season. They looked likely to challenge for finals before falling away again mid-season.

Their record in Sydney is one that resembles a train wreck with the Blues winning just one of their past nine matches at the SCG dating back to 1994, it’s also worth noting that the Blues were defeated a few rounds ago by GWS in Sydney.

The Blues will need to find a replacement for Andrew Carrazzo who was subbed off during the game against St Kilda after he suffered a quad injury.

Coach Mick Malthouse may have a few selection dilemmas with some impressive VFL performances including Jarrad Waite (21 disposals, eight marks, three tackles, three goals) and Jeff Garlett (20 disposals, including 14 in the final term) pressing their claims for a return to the seniors.

Matthew Watson booted three goals and midfielder Nick Graham impressed again with 22 disposals.

For the Swans Shane Biggs is again putting his name up for selection with an impressive best on ground performance against Ainslie. Tom Mitchell also impressed after recovering from an ankle injury, while Ryan O’Keefe had another strong performer.

They are all vying for just the one spot however and that would be if Zak Jones doesn’t recover from suffering a concussion last week.

Prediction:
With the lure of equaling a club record right under their noses, I can’t see the Swans losing this. Carlton still have many questions to answer and I believe they are up to the task in this one.

Swans by 54.

Why don't you find a player struggling to get a game at another club and turn them into a player that can get 40 touches in a game. God damn Buddy. Stop winning games for us and give our other C-graders the chance to find the ball!

Cheers for the coverage. Frustrating game. Sydney will proabably buy Dangerfeild soon and none of us will get near them next year either.

Full Time An irresistible second half sees the Sydney Swans record a comprehensive 71 point win and tie their club record for winning 12 games in a row. They will attempt to break that record next round against the Hawks, as for the Blues they put in a good two quarter record but were blown away in the third quarter, it doesn't get any easier as they play the Roos after the split round. Q4 - 2:23 remaining Swans cut the Blues open through midfield and Cunningham with a penetrating kick finds Rohan in the pocket, it's a tight angle and it doesn't work back for him. Swans 18.14.122 - Blues 7.9.51

Q4 - 3:40 remaining Pyke has some good hands for a big fella, McGlynn has to stop and prop with Simpson bearing down, Malceski gathers but he can't find Reid. Casboult now finds Yarran who has been quiet at half forward. He gives the hands to Gibbs who is run down, Touhy sends to the square and McVeigh rushes again. Swans 18.13.121 - Blues 7.9.51

Q4 - 5:28 remaining Curnow has a couple of bounces and then goes down the line and runs out. Unbelievable to think Franklin has kicked six goals in the second half. The Swans have just smashed the Blues after half time. Swans 18.13.121 - Blues 7.8.50
